John Howard loses his seat:Bwaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah
In first past the post elections, there is nothing worse than a seasoned parliamentarian losing his seat and he lost it to a woman. :rofl:
http://www.abc.net.au/elections/federal/2007/

This is beyond humiliation.

14. Yes, but Howard didn't just lose his job as PM to Rudd...
he lost his own parliamentary seat to someone called Maxine McKew. Good for her - she'll no doubt be regarded as a giant-killer by her party!

From what I hear, Rudd isn't super-left-wing, but ANYONE's got to be miles better than Howard. Bet Howard's feeling pretty miserable at the moment, and serve him right. HORRIBLE man!

9. Didn't Bush visit Australia just two months ago, trying to prop up Howard's campaign?
I think Bush even had General Petraeus speak to the Australia media, in an attempt to influence their election. Once again, the triumph of the Chimp!

33. yes, he's a uniter and an inspiration!
In a manner of speaking.

I especially love how Bush doesn't seem to realize (or want to admit) that he is the Electoral Kiss of Death -- even people in his own party are shying away from photo-ops.

You know it's bad when you look at the campaign literature, and the candidates are afraid to show photos of, or even mention, the leader.

Zapatero withdrew his troops. Rudd will do the same according to BBC this morning.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/asia-pacific/7111479.stm
<snip>
Mr Rudd said he would overturn a number of his predecessor's policies and sign the Kyoto Protocol and pull Australian troops out of Iraq.

He also promised to attend next month's UN climate change summit in Bali.

Meanwhile, Peter Costello - Mr Howard's nominated successor - has turned down the post of opposition leader.

The BBC's Phil Mercer in Sydney says that Australia's conservatives are wounded and fractured and it could take them years to recover from this election defeat.

Mr Rudd promised to name his new cabinet by the end of the week, with one of his key appointments expected to be Julia Gillard as deputy prime minister.

If appointed, Ms Gillard will become the first woman to hold the position.

41. And the man he recommended for the new leader has turned down the offer
It doesn't get much worse.
<snip>
Plans for an orderly Liberal leadership transition were thrown into chaos after Mr Costello turned down the leadership today.

"It is time for the young people of talent and ability - of whom there are many - to be given their go," Mr Costello said.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/11/25/2100623.htm

Costello is pissed because he and others in the party wanted Howard to resign a year ago.

maybe we can send him down to the unemployment office and let him suck on some of the reforms he unleashed on us, like work-for-the-dole, no benefits unless you can show you've been looking for work. Old age pension? Sorry, out of luck, those have been slashed too. Oh the irony.

32. in a parliamentary system, this is a big humiliation ...
In Canada, if a leader can't hang onto his or her own riding, it means open ridicule in the press -- and often paves the way for major party infighting, i.e. "dump the leader before it's too late".
