HEADS UP = Bill Moyers Journal tonight = The Legacy of Lynching
http://www.pbs.org/moyers/journal/11232007/profile2.html

In 2000 the newspapers were full of talk about an exhibit entitled "Without Sanctuary" on view in a New York gallery and later at the New York Historical Society. The cause of the talk? The exhibition was of lynching postcards — souvenirs of violence once popular items in the United States. Nooses are news these days. The now well-publicized incident in Jena, Louisiana is just one of a string of events — in states from New York to Minnesota. In 2006 James H. Cone spoke on the resonance of the symbols of lynching:

"...blacks and whites and other Americans who want to understand the meaning of the American experience need to remember lynching."

3. Thanks... I don't get PBS channel clearly for some reason, but
I'll tune in nonetheless. I adore Bill Moyers. Now, he would make a good President.

6. Now remember. Billo says that Moyers is part of the left wing
conspiracy. Fear him, and don't trust him. Remember, we don't condone torture, and blacks were never lynched. It's all a left wing lie!

15. So true.
When I first heard it I didn't quite hear the words or make them conscious. Her voice alone expressed a profound truth that I had not quite heard as clearly before. It is not "only:" about lynching, but trhe kind of man-against-man (or woman) systemic atrocities that lynching was one variant of. And if one doesn't tear up when listening, then that is a symptom.

(edit - the second, Simone, is just audio with a graphic, not a performance tape -- that one got RIAA'd back into to a private repository.)

17. WOW!! Ya gotta luv Bill Moyers. Where have all the journnalists gone?
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 01:10 AM by L. Coyote
Moyers is a surviving exception to the current trend of pretty heads reading the news w/o knowing who writes it.

19. Those people aren't journalists; they are mouthpieces for
corporate America.

Moyers, on the other hand, IS a journalist. He never ceases to impress me.
