China's bid for world domination
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/education/7098561.st...

What defines a global "superpower"? In the past, it was the size of national armies or possession of nuclear weapons.

But now there is a more important (and peaceful) benchmark: the size and prestige of university systems.

And, while the US is still the global higher education "superpower", China will soon be knocking it off top spot if current trends continue.

This week, an international audience gathered in London for the Worldwide Universities Network conference, was given a dramatic insight into just how rapidly China is moving through the field in the higher education race.

China is now the largest higher education system in the world: it awards more university degrees than the USA and India combined

It should be a wake-up call to universities and governments around the world. Moreover, it should be a sobering warning to those who decry the relatively modest ambitions of the British government to aim for 50% of young people having some experience of higher education.

Consider some of the facts. China is now the largest higher education system in the world: it awards more university degrees than the US and India combined.

Of course, this is partly a matter of the sheer size of its population. But it is not just that. The rate of university expansion has been beyond anything anyone in the West can easily imagine.

2. I don't understand why this is a surprise to anybody
with the population of China being what it is. I mean, if the US population was four times its present size, with the same standard of living and economic development that we have now, I'm sure our university system would be of equal size. Trying to compete quantitatively with a country four times your size is not a good idea. All we can do is make sure that the universities we do have are as good as possible, which is a whole other story.

5. And our little piglet in office plus Nixon on down are to blame
for helping China surpass us. How could they be soooo stupid? Just because there is capitalism, it does not logically follow that there is democracy.
I only have a B.S. degree, and I seem to see things that these supposed experts don't see, or are they just selling out the USA and plan to all move to Switzerland with all the money they stole?

6. they can take all of their toxic crap
and piss off!

I am not buying any more things Made in China and they can count on that.

What a bunch of stupid fools they are - investing their entire paychecks in their two-bit commie "stock market". Their greed will be their downfall and will have no one to blame but themselves!

7. This didn't just happen in the last seven years.
The degradation of our educational system has been going on for a long time, most notably at the primary and secondary levels.
