The problem with "Inherit the Wind" is it takes vast liberties with the Scopes Monkey Trial, and is often confused with it. While parts of the Script is taken from the Actual Trial, the authors of the play edited them to reflect their story line, even if the result was OPPOSITE of what Bryan has testified to (For example at the end of the Trail Brady goes into a fit about the $100 fine, no such fit occurred at the trial, for Bryan had actually lobbied the Tennessee legislature the year before NOT to put a fine on the law, and had offer to pay the fine himself for the punishment was unimportant to Bryan, what was important was the concept that if the majority of people want something, the Majority should have it). Another example is Brady's comment, that the world was founded in 4004 BC, Bryan in the Actual trial points out that was the comment in the version of the Bible provided by Darrow, he himself had NEVER MADE THE CALCULATION.
Which brings up another problem with the play, in the play the Darrow Character that brings up Darwin's books, but in the Trial it was Bryan who introduced his copy of Darwin's books, thus Darrow introduced the Bible into the trial, and Bryan introduced Darwin. OF the three books, the Bible and Darwin's two books, Bryan had read the bible since birth and had read Darwin's books at least 20 years previously and had commented on them for that 20 years, often with Scientists involved with the theory of evolution. Darrow had tried to read Darwin but gave up after reading 50 pages as being to difficult. Darrow saw Scopes as his chance to attack fundamentalist Religion, something the ACLU did NOT want to do (And tried to get his fired but Scopes wanted Darrow and it was Scopes Case even through the ACLU was paying the cost of the Defense).
Anyway, Bryan conceded quite early that the world was older than 6000 years, a "Young Earth" was NOT needed for his religious convictions. Bryan was more than willing to permit the teaching of Evolution in School (In fact the Act in question did NOT outlaw the teaching of Evolution, just the teaching of Human Evolution, and it was pattern after a proposed law written by Bryan in the early 1920s). Bryan was less concerned about HOW God made the earth then HOW people were acting in regards to each other. While Secretary of State Under Wilson he had read a book (Bryan read a lot of Books) that most of the German High Command were followed Darwin's teachings of the survival of the Fittest as to the interaction of Humans. Bryan rejected this dog eat dog attitude and wanted a more pacific attitude among people, which he saw dieing under the pressure of teachings of Social Darwinism so popular during that time period. Bryan did NOT attack the theory of evolution because he opposed Science, he opposed it for he saw it encouraging an attitude of Social Darwinism.
