Religious fanatics attack women in Basra
The militants target women who go to work, as well as those who do not exhibit what the attackers consider sufficiently 'modest' dress or behavior. Some women have been shot; others have been told they should be 'sold' (into marriage) instead of going to work.

"A spokesman for one of the largest Shia groups, the Sadrists of the radical cleric Moqtada Sadr, told the BBC that its members did not attack women or try to enforce Islamic law on women by violence.

But he did not rule out that others were doing so."

What a nightmare.

4. I find the comparisons of idiots who FORCEFULLY apply religious law
to those who advocate for modesty really out of line. That would be like saying all liberals are socialists who want to take away property rights.

5. Heard this on the BBC this morning...Police too scared to do anything about it.
That point was made several times: police are too intimidated to follow through with investigations. I thought "Bush says we have to stay in Iraq to 'train' Iraqis to take over 'security,' yet after four years they're too fucking scared to investigate these crimes?" What does that tell us?

Incidentally, one woman interviewed said there was more freedom for women under Saddam than now.

10. You know something? They WERE better off with Saddam in power.
We've killed more innocent civilians inside the borders of Iraq, either directly or through our destruction of the social order without replacement than Saddam ever DREAMED off.

I'll die happy if before I go I see Bush convicted of War Crimes at The Hague.
