Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Assessing the State Department Inspector General

Today at 10:00 a.m. the Committee will hold a hearing to assess the performance of State Department Inspector General Howard J. Krongard following a series of allegations that the Inspector General halted investigations, censored reports, and refused to cooperate with law enforcement agencies. This hearing will be webcast live.

Cookie To Be Chewed At House Hearing Wednesday
By Spencer Ackerman - November 12, 2007, 11:56AM

It's official: embattled State Department Inspector General Howard "Cookie" Krongard will finally testify before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on Wednesday.

Krongard, for the uninitiated, is the IG voted most likely to... not investigate waste, fraud and abuse. In September, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-CA), the oversight committee chairman, accused him of scuttling investigations into corruption in State activities and contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Matters got worse when Krongard's subordinates told Waxman that his aides threatened retaliation against them for going public. Condoleezza Rice promised that Krongard would answer the charges. The FBI got involved. It's a whole to-do.

Come Wednesday at 10 a.m., Krongard will get a chance to explain himself. As of last week, the hearing focused primarily on the whistleblower-protection question. Aides to the committee said last week that there were no preconditions to Krongard's testimony, and lo and behold, the title of the current hearing is now the broad-brush "Assessing the State Department Inspector General."

12. His nickname is "Cookie" ????
Right up there with "Scooter".

WTF is up with these old white man Repigs??? They go by these childhood names all their lives and are probably buried with their fraternity rings. It's just a weird mentality, a total arrested development issue.

Yuck!

3. House GOP Report Defends State Dept. Official, despite abusiveness
House GOP Report Defends State Dept. Official

By Glenn Kessler
Washington Post Staff Writer
Wednesday, November 14, 2007; Page A04

A report produced by the Republican staff of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee concludes that while State Department Inspector General Howard J. Krongard has "an extraordinarily abusive management style," charges that Krongard thwarted investigations into Iraq and was motivated by political bias cannot be supported by the evidence collected.

The 117-page report by the minority staff, prepared for a hearing today into Krongard's leadership of the IG's office, is an unusually tough broadside against the tactics of Committee Chairman Henry A. Waxman (D-Calif.). The report contends that Waxman jumped the gun by accusing Krongard in a Sept. 18 letter of a long list of failings before, Republicans charged, the committee had conducted a thorough investigation.

The report asserts that, other than Krongard's poor management skills, 10 of the 11 charges raised in the Waxman letter turned out to be wrong, misplaced or overstated.

"These issues were aired publicly with highly charged attacks against the IG for which there was no evidence, other than the unsupported allegations of current and former employees," the minority report says. It says that the "expenditure of time and taxpayer funds proving that the State Department IG is abrasive and abusive is itself an abuse of the Committee's authority."

Karen Lightfoot, spokeswoman for the oversight committee's majority staff, said its report has not yet been finalized.

"The allegations about Mr. Krongard are serious and deserve better than the distorted facts and glaring omissions in the Republican staff report," Waxman said in a statement. "Today's hearing will be an important opportunity to find the truth about the Inspector General's conduct."

13. Waxman needs to put to rest that the people who testified before
about these allegations were indeed under oath. If they weren't then somebody screwed up.

15. It shouldn't matter. Lying to congress is illegal, under oath or not
At least that is what "they" keep telling us.
