Redone to meet standards ... Grey in California
This posting is not a solicitation for funds...It is a request for ideas. Thank you to anyone who saw the original posting it has been modified to meet DUs standards.

I have fallen through the cracks of people who actually receive aide from government agencies after disasters in America. I have applied through FEMA and the small business organizations for relief...I am requesting that anyone have any ideas based on these circumstances they would be greatly appreciated.

DU ... I am a hard working democratic liberal who's life is the apitamy of what we discuss everyday on your forums. I am looking for a hand up not and hand out. Up until the last year I was (and want to again be) the person donating to organizations that can actually help...not the person seeking help. If I am not allowed to post this type of request to participants on your web sight Where can I post it?

I am behind on my rent and facing eviction. We just came out of a homeless situation in August 2007 that started in October 2006 when my husband needed emergency surgery and we did not have insurance. We had to close our small business which was the main support for our family because he was unable to work in it any longer. My son took custody of his daughter from a “substance abusing” mother to protect her and is living with us. We now receive disability for my husband and my son receives aid for his daughter. The situation was improving as we started to get the business back up and running but we were relying on one job that would pay for expenditures over the last couple of months including our rent. Now unfortunately the job that we did was destroyed by the wildfires and the client is unable to pay off the services rendered because of his own situation.

We need help paying our rent so we can keep our place to stay. Are there any resources available to us. We do probably qualify for section 8 and my son is on the waiting list for himself but my husband and I have not applied and we do not have time to sit on a waiting list right now. If you can recommend any resources public and/or private that may be able to aide us in this situation the information would be greatly appreciated.

1. Check with local charities
That's where I would start. Then look to non-profits in your area that might be able to help.

Another thing to think about is talking with the landlord about payment via work.

3. Thank you
The strange thing about local charities and non profits is they may have a charter that allows them to provide services to people in my exact circumstances but they are only allowed to give to another organization not an individual...and they are reluctant to tell you which organizations that are allowed to give to individuals they have given to...

Seems like a strange catch 22 to me...but I am living the reality.

I am tring to work with the land lord...he really is a great guy...but understandably he has to take steps to protect himself too...and once a lawyer (as in the case of eviction) gets involved everyone one knows there are no winners..

Keep me in mind if you have any other suggestions your help is appreciated.

4. Thank you
Thank you for the links...

I appriciate your tring to help...the funny thing about these organizations some times is that while they are asking for funding it is almost imposible to find out how and to who the funding gets distributed. If you have any ideas on how to figure that one out it sure would be helpful. Thank you so much for reading the post...I know I am no better or worst off then a large portion of Americans today...its just that I am temporary stuck in this position and know there has to be a way out. Just trying to figure it out...Thanks again
