3. It's election day. Lotta people are off anyway.
Did anyone bother to ask the labor unions? You call a general strike if you have support for it, or if you just want to be humiliated.

just sending out invoices.

I forgot about the 'strike'

5. I'm at work
With ever rising gas, oil heat and food prices I can't afford to stay home. As it is we had to choose between no phone/tv/internet for the week and food because I had to buy heating oil which is now 317.00 for 100 gallons this week.

It's going to be a really crappy winter and my kids will end up alone all the time because I think I will have to get a second job just to pay for heat.

6. Is this because 11/6 is 9/11 upside-down or something?

7. Far, far, far too short of notice
and next to zero promotion = a not-so-general strike.

This needs at least a year of regular media presence and promotion before it can even have a breath of a chance of success. Statistically, the call-ins and no-shows will probably be not even a blip on the page.

Look, these things can't ever possibly work in the current environment. For one thing, you would need media organizations willing to promote an activity the success of which would harm them. I don't see that happening.

Secondly, you need a populace that cannot be fired on a whim, for calling in sick one time. There are too many people- people who this strike and others like it are trying to help- who aren't in the position to participate. In other words, the people who should participate, can't. Thus, we first need strong unions.

A better goal would be a National Worker's Union, a single, monolithic entity spanning all fifty states, which every worker of every stripe would be eligible to join. That would have a great deal of power, more than unions have today. Frankly, I'm surprised such a union doesn't already exist (and the AFL-CIO doesn't count; I'm thinking bigger than that).
