“Lock the door,” Bush said. A few minutes later Colin Powell could be heard trying the doorknob.

“Lock the door,” Bush said. A few minutes later Colin Powell could be heard trying the doorknob.
But there is another, less attractive part of the Bush persona: the mean-minded frat boy. At the 1992 Republican National Convention, Senator John McCain was about to speak for the re-election of Bush 41 when young George came up to him and said, according to Draper, “You’ve gotta hammer Clinton on the draft dodging.” That from a man who had weaved his way out of serving in Vietnam. McCain replied, “Sorry, that’s not my thing.”

On Jan. 31, 2001, soon after taking office, Bush held a cabinet meeting. When he entered the room, one chair was empty: the secretary of state’s. “Lock the door,” Bush said. A few minutes later Colin Powell could be heard trying the doorknob. The room “erupted with laughter.” Then Bush ordered the door unlocked. He “had made his point,” Draper says; Powell was “not the big dog any longer.” That the president of the United States would want to show how important he was by humiliating Colin Powell speaks volumes.

26. Trudeau knew * when he was a frat boy. I think his 2004 Rolling Stone interview was...
...where he expressed his opinions ("I knew the type," among others) about the behavior and personality of the young Blivet prefiguring accurately the Bush Jr. presidency.

Trudeau observed that the young Bush was both socially gifted and extremely manipulative, doling out small humiliations to keep people in line and/or off-balance.

It's not a personality type that has ever attracted me, that's for sure.

11. Think about it. The chickenhawk deliberately humiliated a famous General, a war hero who at
that time was almost universally respected and honored, and could have easily been President himself. Chimpy couldn't wait for this opportunity--it would have come sooner or later for Powell. Chimpy had to do this to help assuage his deep feelings of inferiority. He's really a sick, petty little fuck.

34. Indeed. I'll bet Bush was more than a bit envious ... and resentful
He's probably convinced himself that Colin Powell "got all the lucky breaks" (he's already shown that he projects quite a bit!), and that Powell was insufficiently grateful ("why, I gave him that job as Secretary of State, and how does he repay me?").

Anybody in that room who laughed ought to be ashamed -- and that goes double for women and visible minorities, if they did it just to be "one of the gang".

I hold the media completely responsible for the mess we're in (well, maybe not completely -- the Supremes helped). It would have been nice if the media had done their job more thoroughly and in a more timely fashion back then. That goes for the war and most everything else too. Now they're screwing around with Iran. They knew we were getting an immature frat-boy alcoholic, yet they gave him a pass on everything. Assholes.

Or the time a reporter addressed him as "Sir" and not "Mr President"...but that wasn't good enough, so Chimpy shot back at him, "Who are you talking to?"

42. and not to be outdone, Bush suddenly threw in a Spanish (!) quote ...
GREGORY: I wonder why it is you think there are such strong sentiments in Europe against you and against this administration? Why, particularly, there's a view that you and your administration are trying to impose America's will on the rest of the world, particularly when it comes to the Middle East and where the war on terrorism goes next? And, Mr. President, would you maybe comment on that?
DUBYA: Very good. The guy memorizes four words, and he plays like he's intercontinental.
GREGORY: I can go on.
DUBYA: I'm impressed -- que bueno. Now I'm literate in two languages.
-- Dubya taking time out of his busy schedule to belittle NBC News White House correspondent David Gregory, and employing his Spanish "prowess" to do so, press conference with French President Jacques Chirac, Paris, France, May 26, 2002

As you say, Cass -- a mean streak. Insecure and vindictive, to boot -- not a good combination at the best of times, and in a political leader, outright dangerous.

Plus the fact that he's either too stupid or too arrogant to even try to conceal it.

crap he's pulled over the years. Probably would need to split it into a few volumes, actually.

In early April 1986, for instance, George W. was miffed at a prediction by the Wall Street Journal's Al Hunt that Jack Kemp -- not Vice President Bush -- would win the GOP nomination in 1988. At a Dallas restaurant, Bush spotted Hunt having dinner with his wife, Judy Woodruff, and their four-year-old son.

Bush stormed up to the table and started cursing out Hunt. "You son of a bitch," Bush yelled. "I saw what you wrote. We're not going to forget this."

Barging up and screaming obscenities in a restaurant in front of a 4 year old. I would say the 4 year old was probably the mature one. :eyes:

In my travels across the great land, a comment that I hear often from our fellow citizens is, "Mr. President, I pray for you and your family." It's amazing how many times a total stranger walks up and says that to me. You'd think they'd say, "How about the bridge?" Or, "How about filling the potholes?" No, they say, "I've come to tell you I pray for you, Mr. President." (May 4, 2006)

Mayor Virgil Van Beek is with us. Mr. Mayor, thanks for coming. My only advice -- you didn't ask for any -- and I recognize I'm at the federal level, but my only advice is, fill the potholes. (Nov. 3, 2006)

I had an opportunity to say hello to his honor, your mayor. Mr. Mayor, thank you for being here. I appreciate you coming. I'm honored you're here. My only advice is, pave the potholes. (Nov. 5, 2006)

I appreciate the Mayor of Columbus, Georgia, Mayor Wetherington. Mr. Mayor, thank you for being here. Thanks for coming. Mayor Hardin, of Phenix City, Alabama has joined us. Mr. Mayor, appreciate you coming. I know you didn't ask, neither of the Mayors asked, but sometimes I like to remind them, just go ahead and fill the potholes. I'm not suggesting there are any, it's just my advice. (Jan. 11, 2007)

I appreciate the Mayor. Mayor, are you here somewhere? Oh, Mayor, good to see you. Thank you for serving. Appreciate it -- just fill the potholes, that's all I can tell you. And I'm sure you are. (Feb. 6, 2007)

The other United States Senator is a fellow you know pretty well, a man who made his mark in paving the roads and filling the potholes -- former mayor, Bob Corker. Thanks for coming. (Feb. 21, 2007)

How about your President of UAW 249? He's not only the President, he happens to be the Mayor. I told him -- I said, you've got to be a busy guy, filling the potholes, at the same time that he's worrying about the employees. (Mar. 20, 2007)

51. If it were a Dem, the 'conventional wisdom' would be
that they weren't mature enough personally, respectful enough of the office they held and not of presidential character generally. It would be talked about incessantly on cable until it were the standard storyline, a concrete example turned into metaphor to be employed as an aside in every conversation touching on presidential character from that point on.

I care more about the difference in how the parties are portrayed than I do about the specific instances. Clinton double-talked about an extramarital dalliance, while Bush lied America into a decade of war, and in the mainstream media which of the two is considered the "liar"?

Bush will be gone soon, but the mainstream media will be working against America and for right-wing control of this country for the rest or our lives.

60. don't forget...
For those of you with fond memories of Colin Powell prior to the "yellow cake" incident:

He helped hide My Lai...

"The incident occurred three months months before Powell arrived in Vietnam, but he was one of the first to learn of allegations of the willful murder of civilians there, and was assigned to investigate. He found nothing to the charges. 'Relations between Americal soldiers and the Vietnamese people are excellent.' he wrote." p.448 House of War

And also just so you know who was ultimately responsible for his appointment as JCS Chairman, he was appointed over 14 senior 4-star generals, by Bush senior in August of '89, on the recommendation of then Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney.

Usually you have to personally drown at least a dozen newborn puppies to get that kind of glowing recommendation from old Dick.

63. This was only the first time Colin got locked out
on the run up to the "war of choice" Colin objected to some of the "cherry picked intel" and paid the price by being locked out of important meetings. Should Colin have spoke out about it. Oh hell yeah he should have, but he probably feared what would happen if he did. He obviously knew about the wrath of Mad king Boy George, and Oil Slick Dick and what the consequences of speaking out might occur.

Mad king Boy George, and Oil Slick Dick are very sick people. They don't have a problem with threatening people. Some people are born with a mean streak and never learn how to deal with it. Isn't it endearing?:puke:
