RW radio cracks me up sometimes
Every now and then, I listen to right-wing radio just for laughs. Today, on a local show in AM 1400 (near Detroit), I heard quite a claim. The host said that all of the USA's best presidents -- STARTING WITH GEORGE WASHINGTON -- were Republicans!

The problem is that George Washington was not a Republican. He, in fact, died more than 50 years before the Republican Party was formed.

But, hey, you can make claims like that when you can count on your audience to be mostly uneducated -- and unlikely to question anything they hear on the radio.

Say what you want about Air America. But its hosts would never insult the intelligence of the audience that way. And even if they wanted to, they couldn't. Most of Air America's listeners would know roughly when George Washington died and when the GOP was formed.

1. Even counting the Jeffersonian Democratic Republicans as "Republican"
it still neutralizes the claim about George Washington. Washington was a Federalist.

Let's see, greatest Presidents, in chronological order (my opinion, to be fair):

Washington: Federalist
Jefferson: Democrat
Monroe: Democrat
Jackson: Democrat
Lincoln: Republican
T. Roosevelt: Republican
Wilson: Democrat
F. Roosevelt: Democrat
Eisenhower: Republican
Kennedy: Democrat

No one after Kennedy qualifies as "great" in my opinion. If you lower the standards, you get one Republican (Reagan) and one Democrat (Clinton) added to the list, so the balance stays the same.

Democrats lead 6-3-1 or 7-4-1 depending upon your standards. Sorry!

6. Ike built the Interstate Highway System.
That alone merits some credit.

11. Given the Times, Sir, He Was Probably The Right Man
Mr. Stevenson would never have been able to hold Gen. LeMay in check: LeMay would have launched his SAC command on a first strike against the Soviet Union, and likely thrown a coup as well. Gen. Eisenhower as President had the military credibility and support to keep LeMay in his place.

7. Not technically accurate

Jefferson's Democratic party was not the same party that we enjoy today. In fact, it was called the Democratic-Republican party (which was widely known as the Republican party) and was formed in direct opposition to the Federalist party. In the 1820's the Tertium Quids (or simply factions) that had developed within the party split up into different distinct branches. That's the cliff notes version, but the bottom line is that our current Democratic party didn't actually form until much later. While called the Democratic party, their beliefs encompassed a range much further into right-wing thinking.

edit: note to self - always use spellcheck.

8. There is a direct line from Jefferson to Jackson.
The Republican Party, however, was a splinter of both the Democrats and the defunct Whigs (who had earlier broken away from the Jeffersonian Democratic Republicans as the National Republicans).

There is continuity back to 1796 on the Democratic side. The Republican side came out of nowhere in 1854.

Thus, I feel comfortable counting Jefferson and Monroe as Democrats.

12. This is the reason they refuse to read or even listen to opposing opinions.
If Freepers were required to know all sides and all facts before uttering one of their pre-fab opinions, they wouldn't be able to utter them. Therefore, they intentionally remain ignorant.

To conservatives, truth is the enemy, which is why they attempt to blacklist, blackball, boycott, supress, or hound into hiding all those who challenge their prejudice with truth.

Charlie Chaplian and John Lennon were hounded out of the country (Lennon had better lawyers) by conservative Republicans who attempted to shut them down. Why? Because both men were compassionate artists who told the truth.

Can't have that.
