An after-hours office meeting between a young man and a top Roman Catholic official has prompted a fresh inquiry into gay priests. What the investigation could mean for the Holy See.


The priest invited the young man to his office after work hours and, during the course of their conversation on homosexuality, started complimenting the youth on his appearance. The young man told the priest he was "about to commit something with me that is a sin in the eyes of God." Stenico, 60, replied: "No, I don't consider it a sin." When the youth questioned how the priest could ignore the church's teaching that homosexual acts are sinful, the priest cut short the meeting and showed him the door—but not before placing his hand on the back of his leg and saying, "You're so hot." The priest asked his guest not to talk with anyone on the way out.

Stenico has since denied he is gay and has claimed he was only pretending in order to gather information about people he believes are involved in a Satanic plot to discredit the church by seducing priests into homosexuality. "It was nothing more than an experiment," he said, "a study about the theme, and I have fallen in the trap, but I will explain it to my superiors."

Seriously, why would Satan waste time discrediting his own organization? OK, not totally seriously, but the Vatican has been plenty corrupt for centuries. No offense, Catholics, used to be one.

3. I was baptized a Roman Catholic....

I've been a lapsed Roman Catholic since my mid-teens....the MAIN reason for my lapsing was and still is, the utter hypocrisy of the Roman Catholic Church.

I have SO MANY issues with The Vatican and it's Medieval dogma, that it'd be hypocritical of ME to have remained a practicing Catholic.

The totally hypocritical stance on homosexuality is one of the issues....along with the "sweep it under the carpet" approach to pedophile priests, the preaching that contraception is manufactured abortion and the Roman Catholic Church's offensive positions on abortion in general and divorce and sex before marriage are the other HUGE issues that I have with The Vatican.

5. You pretty much hit all my points of disfavor

When I was 19, after a year of college (pretty much only took 30 days to undue, on an intellectual level, everything they taught me in 12 years of parochial school), I had a little discussion with the home parish priest in the confessional. It ended with "just get out of here and come back when you're a Catholic!"

And that's what I did, except for the coming back, or being a Catholic part.
