Website bid to draft Gore to run for US presidency
Oct 18 2007 by David Williamson, Western Mail

MORE than 200,000 people have signed an online petition pleading with Al Gore to run for the White House.

The website draftgore.com is as professional as any designed for an official candidate, but those behind this grassroots initiative insist they have no contact with Gore.

With a Nobel Peace Prize tucked under his arm, Gore has successfully made the transition from frustrated former Vice President to international statesman. He continues to insist he has no plans to run, but this is often seen as a coy way of feeding speculation that he could be persuaded to clamber into a campaign plane once again.

The reasons why he might do this are clear.

He was bred to be a president. His father, Senator Albert Gore Sr, arranged for his son’s birth to be announced on the front page of the Tennessean. He is 59 and has the health, cash and clout to pursue this ambition.

Second, he has a cause. He understands that climate change is a national security issue, and not just the obsession of bearded folk who like to caress a larch at weekends; mass starvation and destabilising floods of refugees are just two implications of the crisis – in a worst case scenario Manhattan could flood.

This is no longer a fringe issue guaranteed to alienate Americans who like to drive trucks the size of Belgium. Mick Huckabee and Sam Brownback – Republican contenders with strong support from evangelicals – describe fighting climate change as a moral mission.

2. The simple truth of ALL of this is
that SIX words could quell this entire notion...and they are SIX words he has NOT spoken.
"I AM NOT RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT".
Al Gore is not a stupid man. He KNOWS the groundswell out there for his Presidency.
Yet, he doesn't "make it all go away" which he COULD VERY EASILY if he wanted to.

4. I don't know, him saying, "I don't plan on running", is pretty definitive to me. nt

6. It's not.
I don't plan on making pork chops for dinner tonight, but if someone walked up and handed me a couple pounds of chops, I might change my mind.
Conversely, I am NOT making pork chops for dinner tonight, and if someone walked up and handed me a couple pounds of chops, I would likely put them in the freezer for another day.
Language is everything.
Al Gore is NOT stupid.
He knows that.

9. Never said Gore was stupid, I just believe him when he states he
has no plan to do so.

It's interesting that we all believe him on everything else but on this one topic we don't.

10. But he even explained about his language!
He said he was not going to make a Shermanesque statement yet. He has said that on several occasions. During THE SAME INTERVIEWS that he has said this, he has repeated that he "has no plans" to run. He has said this as way of EXPLINATON as to WHY he is using the language "no plans". He has even said this in the same BREATH; together, in other words, relating to each other.

Therefore, he is NOT ruling it out, but has no plans. Per his own mouth.
Don't know how much clearer it could be.

3. I really think it'd be interesting if he ran for President ...in the Green Party.

One-third of the country would swallow their tongues.

As an independent liberal who eschews zealous partisanship and regards the Republican Party as the epitome of the corruption of values arising from such blind partisanship, I'd be entertained beyond belief.

My gods in Valhalla! I know some DUer's that'd have to be put in straitjackets. Literally.

It's bizarre, but from a global Green perspective it makes sense. I'd imagine some European Greens would wonder why he deosn't.

I wonder what the "carbon footprint" of the military in Iraq is ... sasquatch?

7. I was thinking about this today

And I think the reason for our excitement about Gore lies in our stories and our myths and our collective consciousness.

Think about it. How many stories have you read about a prince who is kept from his throne by an evil power-hungry noble and goes into exile, where he grows and learns and becomes stronger and then comes sweeping back in righteous anger to take back his throne and right the wrongs done by the interloper?

To paraphrase Terry Pratchett in Men at Arms - we Gore fans are romantics who will wade through seas of metaphorical and rhetorical blood to put a rightful king upon the throne.

Note for the people who are sure to pick up on the royal imagery and use it to naysay and bully - none of us want to go back to monarchy. It's symbolic and metaphorical language.
