First of the SC rules on all claims of Executive Privilege.

Second is the Chief Justice sits as the judge in the Senate trail and rules on motions admissible evidence and questions of testimony

They would have to impeach the SC before they could impeach bush but any guesses on who get to appoint their replacements

13. Oh yes it does! The Chief Justice rules in the Senate during an
impeachment trial. Can't you just see how Roberts would handle THAT!

20. BINGO!
IF the House impeaches, there is no way the CJ of the SCOTUS would allow the Senate to convict his li'l Georgie. Why waste the time and energy?
Just go after everyone via investigations, some SWORN testimony and indictments, tighten the noose, strangle the assholes. I agree that however delicious it would be to see Preznit Dick and Li'l Georgie hung on a proverbial rail on their way to prison, I believe there are more effective tools and strategies than impeaching. For instance, defunding the war(s). The Dems have GOT to stop supporting all this "Supplemental" shit! My $0.02

These people aren't stupid. I think they'd impeach him in a minute if they thought it would help with the elections in 2008.

11. The real reasons
They are afraid of getting anthraxed and losing close family members by mysterious fatal accidents.

Also they know the NSA wiretap harvests on ALL OF THEM would kill the political careers of all but the most pious virgins, which are kinda hard to find in politics.

18. What's off the table
I agree. Pelosi has said from day one impeachment is off the table. What was the agreement? IMHO, Dems took impeachment off the table, Bush took anthrax off the table. That simple.

26. It will actually make matters WORSE
You need a simple majority in the House, and a two-thirds majority in the Senate, to get rid of an official via impeachment.

The House isn't really that much of a problem. We get four or five catherders in there, get all the Democrats on the same page...boom. The impeachment goes forward to the Senate.

The Senate's the problem. We supposedly have 51 Democratic-leaning votes: 49 actual Democrats, Bernie Sanders and Joe Lieberman. Forget Lieberman; he is more of a Republican than most of the people who are in the Senate Republican Caucus. We've got 23 Republican senators who are up for re-election in 2008, and we need 17 of them. We won't GET 17 of them.

If we walk Shrub into the Senate and he gets 66 votes to impeach, he will portray it as a great victory then go on some kind of huge dictatorial rampage. He won't see it as most logical people would--that one senator saved his ass from going into the history books as the first president to actually be removed from office.

I would appreciate seeing Congress go into "maintenance mode." Have them forward nothing but spending bills: index all non-war spending increases to the rate of inflation; maintain all war spending at the same level it is right now. This will force Shrub to start at least a minimal drawdown. Continue to write bills and announce them with the caveat that they're not being sent to the White House because our obstructionist president vetoes any improvement in the American condition.

unlike many people here at DU, who do not understand that 51 is less than 67.
