Canada's version of "DU" (Rabble) slam Gore!
http://www.rabble.ca/babble/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=13&t=003297

This is a Canadian political forum frequented mostly by the NDP devotees (the hard-core left party of Canada). I sometimes go there to read some in-depth commentaries about Canadian politics as our Canadian forum on DU is rather quiet most of the time. I can see that there are quite some intelligent contributors on Rabble, but some are quite zealous in their support of the NDP (e.g., Liberal Party is quite disliked there as it is seen as too corporate-friendly and a softer version of the Conservative party). Anyway, there's a thread on Gore winning the Nobel Prize. Quite stunning to see the rancid cynicism there! The Democratic Party has not been highly regarded on Rabble (Dems are on the mod-right compared to most Canadians, believe it or not! That would put them on the same pedestal as the Liberals and some soft c-Conservatives). But still, what I read there...I had to remind myself that I wasn't on LGF, Freep, and other hard-right sites lambasting Gore's winning the Nobel Prize.

Here are a few samples:

quelar
yeah good for him. Another American 'leader' who did nothing good in office but is rewarded for it anyway.

Keep in mind, Henry Kissinger has one of these too, and I can't think of many people who killed more for a 'peace' prize.

jester
Dumbing down the Nobel prize to another insignificant gong. Whats next? Bill Clinton gets a Nobel gong for advancements to gender relations?

I AM WOMAN
Gore is way too conservative for my tastes. He proved that when chose Joe Lieberman for VP. Plus I don't think he can be trusted on insuring abortion rights. And his wife led the charge to stick warning labels on the records with "dirty words" back in the 80's. I wish both the Clinton's and the Gore's would just go away.

The Wizard of Socialism
I wonder how much carbon Albert Gore III has spewed with his mansions and private airplanes over that time. And if you took the total amount of carbon emissions and divided it by that amount, what would the multiplier be? I think we have a new measurement for pollution here - The Gore. As in, total carbon emissions for the United States were 214,000 Gore last year. Up 19,000 Gore over 2006.

Michelle
But that's okay. He paid for his indulgences in sin credits, so he's allowed to pollute as much as he likes, as long as he's rich enough to pay other people to conserve for him! Ecocapitalism will save the planet!

To be fair, there are a few that have supported Gore and his winning the Nobel.

Brian White
I am surprised that the thread is so negative.
Gore got his prize for the inconvenient truth that he has being doing non stop for what? 5 years?
He has spread the word of environmentalism more convinceingly than anyone ever before him despite the opposition has been more fierce and a million times richer than his one man campaign.

West Coast Greeny
Obviously Al Gore won the Peace Prize for what he has been doing AFTER he left the office of the vice-presidency, not what he did during it. His campaign outside the office was probably a greater contribution to the fight against climate change than the sum of everything the Clinton administration did. I like Al Gore the crusader a whole lot more than Al Gore the politician.

2. The NDPers I know all seem to like Gore ...
Edited on Sat Oct-13-07 11:07 PM by Lisa
I was at a party meeting on Thursday, and several people were wondering what would happen with the Nobel announcement the next day! And the woman who usually runs in my riding came up and congratulated me for giving some of my students tickets to the Gore lecture here in town a couple of weeks ago. (I hadn't mentioned this to her, so I believe she got the news about my class contest from the local media.)

I'm working for the federal campaign when they do call the election (might be in the spring, or as soon as this month) ... and believe me, people dissing Gore are going to get a challenge, from me, to go out there and do as much as he does. Those who claim to be NDP stalwarts had better be able to account for their own position on global warming, because I remember a time, not that long ago, when even a lot of NDPers weren't willing to take a stand on emission caps.

4. Tell me about it
So do you think the Rabble bunch are poor representatives of the NDP crowd?

7. I'm not on Rabble so I wouldn't know ...
One person in our group posts occasionally, and oddly enough she was one of the ones who was most excited about the Gore visit! I even inquired about getting her a seat in the "overflow room", but they were checking ID at the door and only university staff and students were allowed in.

It's possible that the negative posts don't even reflect the consensus at Rabble. After all, it's possible to find a few people here on DU who are quite vocal about any particular issue, but don't represent the majority.

3. I often wonder whether he'd be slammed here, too
if he were a front-running candidate right now.

I'm amazed to see him embraced by so many progressives here. He did some great things, I don't agree with the criticisms you've quoted, and I could support him, but I never thought of him as a staunch liberal.

6. You beat me to it.
If he were to run, you can bet he'd go from his nearly mythological stature to something more along the lines of what, say, Pelosi enjoys.

No wonder he doesn't want to run. With friends like us.

5. I never thought they had to post their party affiliation cards online...
You know... Commandos here... Commandos there...
