Breaking Supreme Court rules NYC has to reimburse parents for private school
WASHINGTON (AP) The Supreme Court has affirmed a ruling requiring the New York City school district to reimburse parents who enrolled their learning-disabled student in private school after deciding public schools were unable to meet the child's needs.
They should order public schools to accommodate disabled students, not send our tax money to a religious schools which claim that they can accommodate the child.
The next logical step is a parent demanding the public school pay to send their kid to a private religious school because by law the public school can not accommodate the child. The state paid for "for profit" schools are off and running. Yeach.
I believe disabled kids should be able to attend school and the Federal Government believes so too, hence the federal mandate that public schools do so.
Where the snag comes in is that it is an UNfunded mandate. If I remember correctly the fed only provides maybe 15% of funding. With school districts struggling (here in Michigan times are very tough!) this is quite a heavy financial burden to already struggling districts.
I think it's high time the fed kicked in a substantially larger amount toward this noble effort.
