MUST READ @Dkos. Lindsey Graham on Abu Ghraib vs Ted Kennedy and Janice Karpinski.
Edited on Tue Feb-13-07 09:00 AM by blm
This is a first person account of what happened last night after the HBO Ghosts of Abu Ghraib film was shown at CFR. Jeffrey Toobin moderated a panel including Lindsey Graham and Ted Kennedy. Janice Karpinski was in the audience.

Graham was asked about the Military Commissions Act, which drove him to mention "the enemy" at least five times. He pointed out that the US had not given prisoners incarcerated inside the US in World War II habeus corpus rights.

He did not point out that 80% of those in Abu Ghraib and 90% of those at Guantanamo were innocent; had been pointed out by bounty hunters or were just driving cabs, trying to earn a living when they wound up in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Teddy said about habeus corpus: "It is basic to everything we stand for."

And then a moment that could only happen at an event like this: Jeffey Toobin asked Janice Karpinski--remember, she was there-- to respond to Lindsey Graham if she wanted to.

Oh, she wanted to! She said to him that she was from South Carolina and could not wait to get back there and make sure everyone knew what he had said. No one, she said, had made a public comment about her like that. Graham, she said, her voice getting stronger by the word, is as cowardly as Miller and Sanchez. "No one asked me what happened," she said. "We asked for a court martial. But the Army did not want me to testify in court."

3. powerful diary entry - agree a *must read*
right down to the sad/commentary last paragraph per the lack of outrage/emotion of the 'inside the beltway' audience members.

Thanks for posting this.

6. I will have to keep an eye out for her posts.
of course I might not recognize them unless she uses the same name here.

Though as I read the entry I thought of one old-time dc based DUer who I only see post once in a blue-moon these days.

8. Remember what Graham said after he viewed the Abu Ghraib videos and photos we didn't see?
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/4925942/

<snip>Graham, a veteran of the House Judiciary Clinton impeachment hearings in 1998, had his sound bites honed to a sharp, quotable edge: “I want to prepare the public. The worst is yet to come in terms of disturbing events.”

A few minutes later, Graham told a press conference, “We’re talking about rape and murder here, we’re not just talking abut giving people a humiliating experience, we’re talking about rape and murder and some very serious charges.”

10. And then he caved to BushInc - just like McCain.
All Rove had to do was dangle their presidential campaign workers in front of them - Lindsey wants that VP spot with McCain.
