My "Why Trust Bush?" letter makes it to print
Why Trust Bush?
A person wrote to Speak Out recently saying that unless we have tactical military experience, we should not criticize President Bush’s plan to escalate the war in Iraq. The Joint Chiefs of Staff, Colin Powell, and Generals Abizaid and Casey have come out against escalating the war. A majority of our own military is also against this fifth “surge” in Baghdad. Almost everybody with actual military experience is against the Bush plan. That leads me to ask, what are the tactical qualifications of those few on the fringe that support the escalation? We have a president who avoided Vietnam and a vice president who “had other priorities” during Vietnam. According to the Washington Post, the troops Bush is sending into Iraq will not have enough armor or vehicles to support them when they arrive. It would be more proper to question why we should trust anything that Bush says regarding Iraq, rather than to question those who question Bush. He and his cabal have been so wrong on everything else regarding Iraq

3. Good. Congratulations.
That is exactly what we need to do. The Right Wingers are usually the ones out there in force getting their voices heard while we sit silent.

11. Somebody more experienced than me
and more knowledge (H2O Man) has said more than a few times here on DU that writing letters to the editor is one of the most effective ways to get our message out.

And, you're correct - this is an area we have been behind the RWers... They get the message on Limbaugh, which is repeated on the other RW shows and if even 1% of the audience writes a letter to their local newspaper, it is still quite a few letters.

22. Paul Begala was quoted as saying that a mere 100 letters (as in
snail mail letters) would change the course of a news program.

You've GOT to weigh in. The bad guys don't hesitate to do so, and if we don't, the readers out there will assume the bad guy position is all there is. That's why hate radio has had such an impact, up until recently: because it was the ONLY GAME IN TOWN. You just did NOT hear the other side (ours), and therefore, the other side did not exist.

Furthermore, remember this: ONE letter, a SINGLE message of any sort, is regarded as representative of many other similar viewpoints from people who either didn't have the time to write in for themselves, or had some other reason why they didn't weigh in. Maybe they thought it'd be useless. BUT THEY STILL FEEL AS WE DO ON THE ISSUE. That's why radio stations have request lines. That's why public opinion organizations do polling. That's why there are exit polls. It gives a snapshot of a larger picture. And depending on market size, one letter (or phone call or other sort of message) is considered representative of perhaps a dozen others, or a hundred others, or maybe a thousand or more - if it's a big city.

You simply HAVE to make yourself heard. I've told this story before, and apologize for the repetition, but I saw it again and again with my own eyes. When I worked at the A.P., A SINGLE complaint from some member station got the brass jumping like nobody's business! Even just one - because they'd figure if this person or this station was complaining, others probably shared that view but just didn't take the time to sound off. And whatever the complaint was about, it got dealt with, post haste. They NEVER brushed this stuff off.

That is what we all need to do, put the question back on them. Good for you on taking the time to write your opinion and getting it in print. Many people will see that and agree with you.

H2OMan is right. We have to get the rational viewpoint out there where hopefully some of our fellow citizens will read it and think about it a bit.

15. I try to submit at least a few a week to this one
since it is anonymous.

I think my 60 day limit for the Courant is coming up soon as well, so I need to write into them as well.
