Cover your ears because I'm going to scream right now.
Edited on Thu Oct-04-07 01:41 PM by sfexpat2000
As you know, Brad Newsham and I and others have been doing performance art for impeachment here in San Francisco.

And, our local media is in lockdown. It's just infuriating. Do you know how hard it is to ignore 1200 people in one place in San Francisco? This isn't a big town. You'd pretty much have to blindfold yourself and hope you don't trip over us.

I've faxed, called and emailed the world and the world doesn't want to hear about it. Because my ex was in entertainment, I've promoted lots of different kinds of events and I have NEVER encountered such a big fat wall of silence. Ever.

So, the appearance is, Nancy Pelosi's district is just fine with the status quo -- and that's just not true of the progressive community here, not by a long shot. You can't throw a rock around here without hitting a really pissed off progressive. But, how would anyone know?

All I can think is, thank the FSM for the net. For Skinner, for you all, for David Swanson and Rob at OpEdNews. Because of you all, our Permanent Record will show that we didn't just sit back and let this happen.

Edit: We're at it again on Sunday @ 11 a.m. Details here: www.beachimpeach.org

30. I have come to believe that the only way to get the attention
of the msm is to use a new tactic. Take the protest to their front door! Do it right in front of the T.V. station, the newspaper offices etc. Make sure they can't pretend they don't see you. Ocean Beach and Crissy field are great places for scenic backdrops but the front door of the media forces them to pay attention.

BTW, if you decide to do this, count me in. I too am fed up with the total news blackout of dissent by the corporate whore media.

45. Yup. I've thought that a long, long time. Deliver dissent to the CM's doorstep.
Honestly, I believe if ALL ranges of dissent are ON THE MEDIA'S FRONT (and back, for that matter) STEPS,...it may prove to be the most effective means of getting our voices heard.

Just think, the permits may be a helluva' lot easier to acquire because no elected official (requiring absurd amounts of 'protection') would be involved. We could EASILY surround numerous outlets in every major city across the nation.

At the very least, trying a new plan may bring different results. Yes?

36. Good God and what a beautiful job you've done
We in D.C. watch in admiration and awe at the stuff you guys have done. Also the Los Angeles Impeachment Center. Our group managed to get media coverage from one little newspaper in the D.C. area, the Alexandria Times, who interviewed our group, Virginians for Peace and Accountability, after we had a Town Hall Forum. We are also associated with a Silver Spring man who got arrested for selling IMPEACH HIM buttons. This guy got interviewed by a Washington Post Reporter, but very little else.

I and others share your frustration. I've just about given up on this whole project.

Kind of a funny story--(Only kind of) I was doing cardio at the gym. I keep it at 165, which is age appropriate, but not that hard for me. My mind starts to wander, I'm listening to some heavy metal anti-bush music, and I start thinking about the fucker, and how he NEEDS to be impeached. We're all so furious and so frustrated, and confused, because of the silencing.

Your example is so powerful. It's proof. And in the most progressive district in America, yet!

What we need to remember is that what we see is not what we are. It's distorted. People leaving DU over this stuff.

Glad to hear the folks from Berserkeley are still in the fight. I did two tours there in the sixties - one as an undergrad in 63-65 and one as an employee in the People's Park days. Most fun I ever had in my life.

Keep after Pelosi - she can't ignore ya forever.

Really--there are 2 big stories here. The first is the protest itself, and the second is the blackout. Find a stringer for FAZ or the Guardian or something & just feed them the story. That way you get stories online that you can lik to, etc. & start pushing back here.

81. This "lockdown" seems to be becoming very common in the Empire lately
One would expect such during the constant degeneration of the remnants of the Old American Republic, and it is amazing at how easily the Bushie Comrades have done this without using bettle-browed KGB Men standing behind people with drawn guns.

Yet, in a uniquely American way, the exact effect has occurred. Not just for your story, but for hundreds, thousands maybe, and many more nationally based and much more highly significant stories.

It is amazing, and yet is has become so commonplace as to be boring.

Was it always this way? Cronkite and Severeid and Murrow? I find it hard to believe, but in any totalitarian society, one never does know exactly what to believe and often everything is a lie.

Anyway, "lockdown" is a permanent feature now of Imperial Amerikan Infoganda.

Joshua Norton is one of my favorite legends and a very interesting story. He was Gandhi before Gandhi came to flourishan. Like during the Chinatown riots, he bowed his head and said the Lord's Prayer in the middle of the riot zone until the riot ended. That is true courage.

in case the event itself isn't enough to be worth it to them. Right next to the place where this is happening is one of the very coolest places for kids in the Bay Area, Adventure Playground. It's a playground built largely by kids, and you can either play on what's already built or you can build more, or both. A very fun place to go before or after BI4. Highly recommended. Inspiring public space. If you don't have any kids with you and aren't a kid yourself, I recommend going by to take a look.

If I have your permission I would like to post the info at a couple of groups. I did write to BBC and ask them to cover the grass root efforts in this country and specifically mentioned you. I figure it can't hurt and may help.

There's a small protest every Friday in Claremont. I have asked and asked for coverage and get ignored. Most of the people are retired church workers. Some marched with Dr. King, others have worked for peace all over the world. I am 54 and they consider me very young. It really makes me mad how much the press ignores.

Edited on Thu Oct-04-07 11:13 PM by TwoSparkles
...Sfexpat, and I think you highlight a reality that our country faces.

Our current media is an arm of the government. Our media might not be
controlled by the government, but corporations and corporate interests
are tantamount to our Constitution and the interests of US citizens.

In effect, the government is barely criticized because the corporate
media masters are closely tied to the White House--which kow tows
to corporate handouts and legislation that enriches media moguls.

I applaud you for what you are doing. It's gutsy, it's essential and
it's effective. Even though the MSM isn't covering it, lots of people
see this. That's why these demonstrations are so critical. Many of us
sit in our houses and wonder why our neighbors aren't outraged, or we
wonder if others feel the same way about BushCo.

We need events such as this to bring people together and spark movements.

I truly believe that the only reason we don't have Vietnam-war-level outrage
is because people are not yet connected. Many people are outraged. Many
are fully away of the crime syndicate that is the BFEE. However, we are all
separate dots. Efforts like yours help people to feel connected, and
eventually we will all figure out how to connect those dots.

In the 60's, it was Woodstock. I believe that something new will happen, to
connect the dots that need to be connected today. I don't know what form that
event will eventually take, but trouble is brewing for this administration--and
your creative protests will help to bring people together.

Even though the MSM doesn't cover it as they should--your acts get people talking
and you create awareness.

Good job! You rock! :)

114. You are so right about connecting with each other.
We're isolated with only the corporate media telling us what we should think about our situation and about each other.

Enough of that. Pushing back isn't easy and it is frustrating but, it's essential.

Edited on Fri Oct-05-07 12:35 AM by petgoat
I hate to be negative, but that's how it is.

People spell out "impeach" on the beach? Marching bands
spell out words in football stadiums every week.

January was 1000 people. If that had been followed by
10,000, then 30,000, then 100,000--that would be news.

But doing the same tired stunt over and over and over
and expecting to get noticed for it doesn't make any sense.

If it's any consolation, the rags like the Chronicle have to attend the yearly conference on journalism, and they all sit around and pout over the fact that each year another 22% of their readers have left them for the internet.

They CANNOT figure out why - so they do things like inter-link their cooking recipes with a Chronicle web page or two full of cooking recipes.

In the last four or five years - MSM newspapers have lost as much as 70% of their readership.

123. These idiots don't fully appreciate the fire they're playing with.
They seem to think that control of the media and a few internment camps are going to keep their heads on their shoulders.

124. Your kind assurance that even the shyest among us is serving a purpose,
keeping the truth alive and dealing with this monster the best way we know how. Maybe we've been naive but we weren't exactly schooled in the seven signs that your government is evil and out of control. And we haven't been trained in how to deal with it if it looks like we truly have devolved into fascism with no clearcut way to start reversing these policies. In the meantime, back at the Repug Corral, paranoia is battling it out with narcissism for supremacy. We've all read books, seen the movies and plays, listened to the music that tells the story of how an indomitable foe is ultimately felled by ... who? or what?
I'm so weary of this. I'm beginning to feel that I'm reading and re-Reading about the same outrage or atrocity over and over and over again.
And it isn't lightening up, either. The crimes and rape of our Constitution are not diminishing during this lame duck season.

Thank you so much for your BeachImpeach. I've always loved to gaze down on those sweet kindred souls' Kudos and kisses!

132. I'm going to call my daughter about this today.
She works in Frisco and hosts a cable sports show. I noticed that there will be an area for the media next event. Maybe she can get a few extra cameras and faces there.

I'll also send her the link.

I hear you. And I'm screaming right here with you.

143. It looks too much like a lark
or a flash mob action. The media is not going to cover it if; a)nobody get arrested, b)nobody is inconvenienced, c)nobody bleeds.

our local media is being protective of Nancy (and of her patronage) right now. But, that's just my reading.

144. Money is the only way to get the message through to the Dems
My progressive friends and I have started to return every solicitation we get from non- responsive sections of the Democratic Party with the words "No $'s until Impeachment !!!" written in large red letters across the contribution request form. Perhaps a few hundred thousand of these showing up in the mailboxes of the Democratic leadership over the next few months will get their attention. Pass the word and let's see if we can get this to go viral. If they do the right thing and impeach, we can always double our contributions later on to make up for the "missing" money.

149. I'm with you, sfxp2k!
The media are bought and paid for. No question.

I missed the 9/15 SF Beach Impeach because I was in DC marching from the White House to the Capitol. It would have gotten ZERO media coverage, except there were nearly 200 arrests.

I witnessed the entire thing. There were no threats on the part of the crowd. There was no violence. The "die-in" volunteers were holding pix of dead soldiers as they jumped over the barrier at the foot of the Capitol steps. They obediently held their hands out as they were cuffed and marched up to the apparent holding area at the top of the right-hand steps.

Soon there were people lined up across the walkway from the right to the left step.

Then the riot police appeared at the left and strode one step at a time while the crowd chanted the "Storm Troopers" theme from "Star Wars".

The buzz was that there would be no more arrests, and that they were waiting for the permit to expire at sunset to arrest anybody at the demonstration.

A guy in front of me who was knotting a bandana around his face said, "Ma'am - you know they've got mace pointed at you right now?"

I left. I needed my job and I'd promised my spouse I wouldn't try to get arrested.

When I returned to work at my "we're a big family" company, I was terminated.

Life in *'s Amerika. Never thought I'd see it in my lifetime.

What an awful thing to come home to. :(

Well, Mike Malloy and Thom Hartmann came through. BI4 is the first local event listed at Green 960 Radio -- the local AAR affiliate. I'm really grateful for that.

Protesting, or was your termination yet another company downsizing??

I think when THEY realized that many of us who did not love the NEW AMERICA being creating by THEM were not gonna leave it - they had our America leave us.
