The Heartless Bastard of the Year Award Goes To......Delta Airlines
Delta Wanted Extra Ticket For Conjoined Twins

PHOENIX -- An Arizona woman who wanted to take her 1-year-old conjoined twin daughters on a cross-country flight to visit relatives was frustrated because she was told she'd have to buy an extra seat.

Mandy Bailey says Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines originally told her she must buy an extra seat because both children need access to an oxygen mask in case of an emergency.

Delta officials also suggested that Bailey contact the American Red Cross to see if it would pay for it.

But Delta officials changed their mind Wednesday and said an extra ticket wouldn't be needed for the twins.

The twins are joined at the chest and share a heart.

The girls each have their own lungs.

2. I guess that's why overweight/obese folks are required to pay for 2 seats
Two oxygen masks. :eyes:

I'm just a bit short of advocating the wholesale nationalization of the airlines ... and strongly advocate reregulation. It's about damned time the human factors were addressed. Treating people as cargo ... like livestock is beyond unacceptable. The airlines are one of the most publicly-subsidized industries in the country... right up there with pharmaceuticals, investment banking, and pro sports.

4. Why did she have to buy a ticket at all? Technically, 1 yr olds can sit on an adults lap for FREE
Requiring no ticket....

So, couldn't the "extra" child who is conjoined have been counted as that no extra charge? Also, how do airlines handle that extra child on a lap if the airline is sold out?

Just wondering and feeling like they need to do some 'splaining....

I also can't imagine the heartless response in this kind of matter and insisting on an extra payment...ick....

5. That explanation doesn't make any sense
Small infants can be held on the parent's lap with no extra seat required. I've actually wondered what a parent would do under the circumstance where a mask was needed. Share?

I know someone (a coworker) who was actually on a commercial jet when they lost cabin pressure and the masks dropped. What happened afterward was the pilot took the plane into a very steep dive to get them into an altitude where the masks weren't needed. She said stuff was falling out of the overhead bins, and other objects people had been holding at the time (books, laptops, etc.) went skittering about the cabin.

I personally believe infants should be in a car seat on a plane. We're expected to stow everything under seats during takeoff and landings in case there is a problem so those objects don't become hazardous projectiles. Why should a baby be exempt from that? No parent would want their baby to go flying about and getting hurt. Yeah, an extra seat would cost more, but IMO, this is a safety issue, not only for the other passengers, but for the baby, too.

9. I think the cargo hold would work. Fit the car set to a travel kennel with an oxygen bottle.
After all ... they should get used to being treated like livestock or cargo. We all should.

:grr:
