Some See Red Over Highway People Scanners

WASHINGTON -- The proposed high-occupancy and toll lanes around the Capital Beltway will be going high-tech to make sure cheaters aren't getting a faster commute.

The $1.7 billion road project set to open in 2013 will use infrared technology to figure out who's on the road -- and more importantly, who shouldn't be.

Ground won't break on the public-private HOT lanes project until next year, but work is already underway to help police say "gotcha" to cheaters in the fast lane.

In five years, officers waiting on the shoulders to spot HOV cheaters could be a thing of the past. Two new lanes will let carpoolers who pay a toll to travel between Springfield and Georgetown Pike on the Beltway.

Infrared technology will scan vehicles using the toll lanes, to make sure there are three or more people inside.

Drivers are divided on whether infrared is a bright idea.
