PSA: New Paypal/Monster Phishing Scam Alert
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 04:37 PM by Kahuna
I received a new phishing email disguised as a job offer with paypal. I copied the text from the email, but the email was in html and disguised to looked like an official Monster.com email. Below is the domain where the email came from. So, everybody be careful. If not for a few grammatical errors, this looks kind of legit....until you get to the part below where it states that you'll have to deposit and withdraw paypal funds from your own account. I sent the mail to [email protected] and they confirmed that it is a phishing scam.

1. Any email that doesn't have my REAL name on it
Edited on Mon Oct-01-07 04:53 PM by hobbit709
is guaranteed to be phony. Paypal knows my real name. If I used monster.com for my resume, a legit responder would know my name. I always look at the link to see who is sending this.
Edited to add. That link goes to someplace in Latvia which would make me suspect it immediately.

4. Anytime you get anything suspicious that says it's from PayPal
you should forward it to [email protected]. They will email you to let you know if it is legit or not.

6. This sounds better than the Nigerian plan that I'm on
The guy says he's a Christian and I've sent my money in good faith, but they are horrible at getting back to me.

Are communications in Nigeria that bad?

7. Saw an interesting one on Ebay the other night.
It looked like a legit auction. You clicked on it and it took you to what looked like another ebay login page, but it wasn't the proper URL. If someone wasn't sure that they were logged in, they would think something funky just dropped them and they had to relogin. I reported it.

8. Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER sign into PayPal
from an email link. Open a new browser window and TYPE the link in your address bar.

When you hit the login page, it should say https://www.paypal.com , which means that it is a secure page.

Paypal will never, NEVER ask you for your information in an email. Any link you get in an email is easy to see if it is legit. Just point your mouse at the link and read the bottom left corner of your browser screen. If it's a spoofed link, it will show the TRUE link down there, like this:

Point your mouse on the following link and look at the bottom left corner of this window~~>> Click here to sign in to your PayPal account

Although the anchor text in the link above says PayPal, it is really a link to one of MY websites....

Always double check links and look for the https when you log in.

Peace!
