Gore calls for ‘global Marshall plan’
By Daniel Pimlott in New York

Published: September 26 2007 19:37 | Last updated: September 26 2007 19:37

Al Gore, the former US vice-president, on Wednesday called for a “Marshall plan” to make job creation and measures to address climate change compatible and urged President George W. Bush to commit to mandatory cuts in carbon dioxide emissions.

“This is an emergency,” Mr Gore told the opening session of the Clinton Global Initiative. “I think that the key to fighting global poverty is to have the wealthy nations and the developing nations join together to reduce global warming … I think what we need is a global Marshall plan to make the creation of jobs around the reduction of carbon the central principle for how we develop this.”

..........

“We don’t have a right to ask anybody in the world to stay poor, but if you can show them that they can get rich quicker … by pursuing a cleaner energy path… that would be a valuable role for the World Bank,” he said. “People can’t seize options they are not aware of.”

1. I want him to run for the Presidency
and, not only win this time, as he did before, but also actually become president.

I think he is the ONLY person in this country that is capable enough to begin the process of de-bushifying, and to take us into the future intelligently.

6. Well there's a little bit of sunshine in an otherwise shitty day.
I had this same idea last night while watching the president of Bolivia on the Daily Show. Weird. Al's vigilant.

I like his plan. That way we don't have to wait for the American people to fucking wake up. Because that isn't going to happen. It's time for change.

7. Get rich quicker? Is this a 4am infomercial?
If we use more of the planet's energy, we have to alter the environment. We can't, cannot, will not, get one without the other. If it's not carbon, it will be something else. What will it be? Who knows, that's why they call them unintended consequences. They will come up, every time. That whole every action has an equal and opposite reaction thing. If we harness more energy for ourselves, there will be a downside.

We don't have much choice though. Who gets to choose who gets what? I know I don't have any right to do so, neither does the US, or any entity. I guess we just have to hope it works out. This better be one hell of an infomercial.

8. LEt it begin in the US first! There are people here living in 3rd world conditions,
and it's awful to keep forgetting about us right here!

I'm glad Gore is talking about this... it's time he broached the subject.

Now, if he will just remember that charity starts at home.

12. I think Gore is right to promote this all over the world. Global warming
is a global problem and can't be solved by changing just one country. He is in India now promoting a green solution poverty and development.

Third world conditions exist in many places. His efforts, and ours, should target those people living in such poverty no matter where they live, New Mexico or (Old) Mexico, New England or (Old) England, Chinatown or China, New Orleans or (Old) Orleans.

16. and it can start here first!
USians can't seem to get it through their heads that there is dire poverty right here in River City. They'll send all kinds of money and aid to Africa, etc., but walk right over people in front of them who are dying.

It's insane.

17. They can start wherever the need is greatest.
Africans are as human as Americans are. There is no justification for them playing second fiddle to Americans when it comes to poverty alleviation efforts.

22. Quite the contrary. I think people like you, and people like me, count for as much as anyone else.
Didn't really expect my "guilt shit" to move you. Just expressing my opinion like we all do here.

20. US, pay your arrears to the UN *ferchrissakes* (flame alert)
On man, that is so offensive. Be an adult.
Do you give your kids a bill on their 18th birthday for everything you spent raising them?

Don't for one second think that the US didn't benefit from the Marshall Plan. The rebuilding of Europe made it possible to sell US goods into their growing economies. (And just like in Iraq today, American companies benefited from lucrative reconstruction contracts. It was a way of funnelling your tax dollars into corporations. SSDD. But that's another rant.)

FYI, those French "surrender monkeys" have repaid their loan in full. And so have the the loser Germans. All other monies that were not grants were converted to grants. No repayment is required.

Didn't DU cry "Injustice!" at carpet baggers who came into LA from outside the state and not include local companies in the reconstruction on New Orleans? Are you, JVS, now going to ask LA to repay the aid they received? Same diff, y'know.

24. I wasn't sure that the poster was being serious.
First time I have seen any one imply that the Marshall Plan was anything other than money well spent - both for the sake of Western Europe's people and for our ability to sell into their growing economies.

13. It's things like this that are getting me upset by Gore. I love him and want him to run.
Doesn't he realize that if he was President, he would have the Power to be the catalyst for change that we need?

I watched the debates last night, and though I am going to vote in my primary for Dennis, none of the candidates hold a candle to Al Gore. This leaves me quite depressed.
