NEW YORK (Sept. 26) - How do you keep a leader as verbally gaffe-prone as U.S. President George W. Bush from making even more slips of the tongue?

14. Do you think they did this on purpose -- to humanize him or somethng?
(As if that were possible.)

15. His
christian conservative base who think ignorance is a value find it quaint that there hero can't speak properly. They even think he has a ranch with a brush pile and they love him for it. Rove's job was guite easy. He's been working on that brush pile for seven years and its still there.

Wouldn't that work?

3. Hilarious! I had no idea Bush was Hooked on Phonics.
When Bush addressed the U.N. General Assembly on Tuesday, the White House inadvertently showed exactly how -- with a phonetic pronunciation guide on the teleprompter to get him past troublesome names of countries and world leaders.

The White House was left scrambling to explain after a marked-up draft of Bush's speech popped up briefly on the U.N. Web site as he delivered his remarks, giving a rare glimpse of the special guidance he gets for major addresses.

It included phonetic spellings for French President Nicolas Sarkozy (sar-KO-zee), a friend, and Zimbabwe leader Robert Mugabe (moo-GAH-bee), a target of U.S. human rights criticism.

Pronunciations were also provided for Kyrgyzstan (KEYR-geez-stan), Mauritania (moor-EH-tain-ee-a) and the Zimbabwe capital Harare (hah-RAR-ray).

White House spokeswoman Dana Perino said the draft, labeled the 20th version and complete with typos and speechwriters' cellphone numbers, had been turned over in advance to help U.N. interpreters who must simultaneously translate leaders' speeches into several languages.

13. Nein! Forbotten!
No child left behind does not allow it! Maybe Neil Bush could insert bushonics into the materials he sells to states to teach students how to take the NCLB tests but not before.

4. It should have been obvious.
He over-enunciates many long words and usually leans forward while he's doing it.

5. I have always believed
that Smirky McChimp was wearing a wire in that debate with Kerry. As other posters have noted, he had that deer-in-the-headlights look and these weird pauses, like he was waiting for Darth Cheney's answer to make its way via satellite from the Death Star to his earpiece. Clinton and Gore are born communicators, intelligent, well-read and knowledgeable on a wide variety of subjects. Chimpy McSmirk (the name works both ways!) hasn't read a book since My Pet Goat and can only parrot back the talking points that his handlers have pounded into his head.

Just imagine what would happen if Dubya's teleprompter had gone out during a SoTU. Hey, maybe we never would have known about the yellowcake in Niger! I would imagine this administration has a considerable speechifying infrastructure in place, with backups on top of backups, to keep their puppet mouthing the words they've written for him instead of trying to wing it with his inimitable garbled, moronic syntax.

I've worked in advertising and television production for many years, and I do write words out phonetically if I think there's a reason the announcer may not be familiar with them. I think the big difference here is that, yes, we can be pretty sure that Dubya *needed* the pronunciation guide, and the notion that Clinton or Gore would have needed them is laughable.

And *this* is the guy who roasted Kerry for his supposed "botched joke" . . .

7. The Kerry debates also convinced me..
that Bush was either mentally ill, on drugs, or both. He was three totally different personalities for each one.

8. My vote was on drugs.
Er, let me rephrase that. :)

It seemed as though they were adjusting his meds between debates, looking for some kind of balance.

11. There was some talk about it at the time....
But, like most Bush events, more recent goofy behavior tended to overshadow it.

12. Hey, cool, we made someone bathe!
Edited on Wed Sep-26-07 03:00 PM by Lobster Martini
Anyone else spot this in in the comments?

Thanks to the demon-crap controlled unions that teach in the government controlled school, there are very few people that even know how to think, and most must be told what to think by the demoncraptic underground. I feel the need to bathe everytime I read one of their posts.

(LM: Oh, how I hope it was one of my posts--I have been trying to tell people what to think and when to bathe--in my government controlled school and my demon-crap controlled union hall--for years. I so love well-reasoned discourse, like correctly inserting the hyphen in "demon-crap.")

(Demoncraptic emphasis is mine.)

17. Nah, they just felt the "need"
doesn't mean they actually did it.
