What kinds of reform do you want?
Edited on Mon Feb-12-07 10:18 AM by ck4829
RW'ers talk of welfare 'reform' and tort 'reform', I think we need to take reform and run with it.

I suggest:

Corporate Reform - Enacting laws that try to punish corporate officers who put companies in the shredder, they jump off with a 'golden parachute' while WE are just out of work.

Contractor Reform - Ending conflicts of interest when it comes to hiring Contractors and punishing Contractors who get paid but fail to do they tasks that they were contracted to do

What things do you suggest?

1. Election financing reform
Get dirty corporate money and PAC money out of campaigns. Make them 100% publicly financed. Demand full acounting of all public and personal money spent. Ban TV and radio advertising. Demand the public airways be used to inform the public during the primaries. Hold real debates, not sterile recitation of talking points that answer no questions. That's half hour debates during primary season and hour long debates during the election season. Make sure moderators have read Robert's Rules and stick to them.

I don't think any other reforms will be enacted until we get election financing reform.

Add to your corporate reforms the possibility of the death penalty. If corporations want to be persons under the law, they must submit to it. That means the withdrawal of the corporate charter for abusive companies like Halliburton and Exxon Mobil for continuous fraud and abuse. Turn them back into simple partnerships with every stockholder proportionately liable for any judgment against the company.

Healthcare financing reform: expand Medicare into a single payer health insurance program. There will be no exemptions for the wealthy and the powerful. All health care will be funded through Medicare and taxes will be a fixed percentage of income.

Social Security reform: get premium overpayments OUT of the general fund. Raise that laughably low cap on contributions to $1,000,000, but only AFTER overpayments are out of the general fund.

and the biggie, Tax reform: Go back to the progressive income tax. Tax all income. The taxes on ridiculous incomes of chief corporate officers should be confiscatory as a disincentive to the greed we've been seeing since 1983. Take the burden off labor and put it back where it so clearly belongs, on capital. This will prevent the rich from ever getting this close to being an aristocracy ever again.

2. I'll take all those already posted, and add drug policy reform.
Do away with the wasteful, racist, oppressive War On Drugs.
