Please! Let's talk about Racism . . .
This story struck my heart, because it has to do with a man who has been suffering for over 30 years now, because he was once a young man who just didn't fit in where he lived. If he had fit it, he would have kept his mouth shut in the presence of Injustice and would likely be a free man now.

Gary Tyler didn't fit in and local members of the Democratic Party used that to their own advantage. The party loyalties have long since switched, but we still bear some responsibility for what happened. I apologize for the guilt trip, but this IS a man's life we're talking about here.

Thirty-two years ago a 17 year old black kid from Louisiana was sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit. The sentence was commuted to life in prison and there he waits. He will be 50 soon and is still waiting for justice. The trial was a sham. Amnesty International has declared him a political prisoner. Gary Tyler deserves a full pardon and a chance to live his life. So much was taken from him, give him back the rest of his life.

DU member redwitch and her husband created this website and she intends to send the names to Governor Blanco.

It will only take a few minutes of your time. Read Bob Herbert's columns about the case and do the right thing. Thank you!

4. I read Bob Herbert on this some time ago...
You'd think the family of the victim would want to know who really pulled the trigger.

You can get Paul Krugman, Bob Herbert, etc. here

Plus, this guy writes some pretty good stuff of his own too.

8. Done.
From one of Bob Herbert's columns:

Now consider this, because it will tell you all you need to know about racial justice in the South. A 19-year-old black man named Richard Dunn was shotgunned to death as he was heading home from a benefit dance in support of Mr. Tyler at Southern University in New Orleans in 1976. A white man, Anthony Mart, was arrested and convicted of shooting Mr. Dunn from a passing car.

Gary Tyler’s current attorney, Mary Howell, ruefully explained what happened to Mr. Mart for the cold-blooded killing of a black stranger: He was sent to prison for life but was pardoned and freed after serving about 10 years.
