Senator Ted Stevens, a neutricidal maniac who wants to allow the phone companies to charge Google and others for delivering their packets to you, gave this incredible description of his understanding of how the internet works. This man is so far away from having a coherent picture of the Internet's functionality, it's like hearing a caveman expound on the future of silver-birds-from-sky and why we need to keep them from flying so high they anger the gods.

I just the other day got, an internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why?

Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the internet commercially...

Senate Commerce Committee Chairman Ted Stevens (R-AK) is as well known for his temper as he is for his power over spending and influence over legislation. His outbursts on the Senate floor and his ties featuring the Incredible Hulk are trademarks.

Yet while his threat to quit the Senate over the funding of a bridge in Alaska may have brought a lot of time on news shows, it took a speech he gave at a markup on Net Neutrality to make him a multi-media star.

Almost two weeks ago, we posted an excerpt of audio from the Senate markup of the telecom bill, a long oration by Senator Stevens explaining why he was voting against a Net Neutrality amendment. In doing so we seem to have inadvertently sparked an internet meme, the Internet as a “series of tubes.” This Technorati chart gives a sense of the trend:

The word is spreading: The Internet is not a big truck. It’s “a series of tubes.” ... Ted Stevens, a Republican from Alaska, shared this information at a Senate committee hearing ....

And while it is true that the Internet is not a big truck, the senator might feel as if he has been run over by one. His comments have been posted on blogs, lampooned on “The Daily Show” and have spawned musical spinoffs, including a folk version and a techno song with the senator’s analogies mixed in. (A video for the latter, with shots of 1960’s mainframes and big trucks, surfaced on YouTube.com on Friday.)

The senator’s gaffes — “an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o’clock in the morning on Friday; I just got it yesterday” — are not just oratorical blunders akin to Dan Quayle’s spelling of “potatoe.” As chairman of the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation, he has significant sway over telecommunications policies.

That may explain why his comments circulated so quickly through the Internet (or “tubes”), especially among those in favor of a net neutrality provision. Adam Green, blogging on the DailyKos, sarcastically called Mr. Stevens “one cool dude” and said he had “genuine information superhighway cred.”

.... Stevens, R-Alaska, is enduring no end of ridicule in the blogosphere ... Snorting loudest are bloggers who are angry at Stevens for not adding a nondiscrimination provision - known as "net neutrality" - to the communications bill ....

"The Internet is not something you just dump something on. It's not a truck. It's a series of tubes," Stevens said ... "And if you don't understand, those tubes can be filled. And if they are filled, when you put your message in, it gets in line and it's going to be delayed by anyone that puts into that tube enormous amounts of material, enormous amounts of material."

.... he said he'd seen these delays firsthand: "I just the other day got - an Internet was sent by my staff at 10 o'clock in the morning on Friday and I just got it yesterday. Why? Because it got tangled up with all these things going on the Internet commercially."

Internet pundits greeted his explanations with a nonstop snigger fest, with extra helpings of derision, on sites such as boingboing, Daily Kos, Fark, MySpace and YouTube.

We are learning more about what investigators were looking for when they raided Senator Ted Stevens
house in Girdwood Monday--and it might not be what you think.

According to an attorney who was briefed on Monday's search, the federal agents took a special interest
in a case of wine stored in the house. The attorney said investigators photographed individual wine bottles.
There's no word on what the wine bottles could be connected to, or what else agents found during the search.
