6. That's gotta be a record recovery from a ruptured appendix.
Most ordinary mortals take ten days at a bare minimum, after surgery.

9. A ruptured appendix is different. Peritonitis is inevitable
But antibiotics get better every year. If you avoid using them, they can be very effective.

14. Exactly. I had an emergency appendectomy for a ruptured appendix in 1974.

I was taken in on a Saturday morning and on the table out cold within 30 minutes of arriving. I was in the hospital for ten days. They get folks out of the hospital sooner these days, but bodies still take time to recover. I had peritonitus and developed pneumonia as well. I had a drainage tube inserted into the end of the abdominal incision for many days, too. Gas pains. (Yeow!) People don't warn about that.

I remember the Levine (nasal-gastric) tube ... and having to get it down before surgery ... and then AGAIN becuase it was removed too early after the surgery. I have a helluva gag reflex.

It wasn't fun.

17. Object lesson: avoid antibiotics until necessary
You were lucky they gave you a shunt - they left mine as an open wound. This is what you get being uninsured in America.

18. Well, it was an open wound (with dressing) after they removed the drainage tube.
I remember changing the dressing. I can't recall (it's been over 30 years) how many days I had the tube and how much longer I had the open wound. It was a while, though. (Smelly, too.)
