Smart ass gets tasered for resisting arrest, Black men get shot for being the same race as a suspect
Edited on Tue Sep-18-07 03:01 PM by wndycty
Let's really ask which should we be more outraged about here. I think what happened to that kid is fucked up, but tell me why I should be more outraged about that than more appalling shit that happens on a daily basis?

While I know DU is sympathetic to the Jenna 6, I have never seen the same outrage on here for them that I do for this kid, who was actually resisting arrest.

Again its FUCKED UP what happened to him, however it wasn't like he was trying to cooperate with the police when they attempted to escort him out. As a Black man I wouldn't dare think to take on the police like he did. I know that is not right, but I have never thought that I was supposed to ignore authority.

2. If his defenders will at least acknowledge he was resisting arrest. . .
Edited on Tue Sep-18-07 02:50 PM by wndycty
. . .I do believe they went too far, however he physically resisted when the police tried to escort him out. If the police tried to escort me out I would be pissed, but I wouldn't be surprised if they tuned me up a bit for resisting.

19. The kid was a punk
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CheY0jYXJjY&NR=1

He is a truly obnoxious little asshat.

He went there looking to start shit, he cut in front of other students to rant and rave. There were no questions, since questions require allowing the other person to respond. He asked them in a rude and aggressive manner and found out that there are consequences for acting like a jerk.

7. You are damned right I did, this selective outrage is bullshit. . .
. . .go into any inner city community in this country and take a look at police brutality, profiling, etc., and EXPLAIN TO ME WHY THE FUCK this should outrage me more.

Don't come to DU and accuse people of "selective" outrage so easily.

. . .I doubt anyone who is confident in their commitment for equal rights for all will be offended, they would know I was not talking about them.

30. It shouldn't
but it should not outrage you less, either.

I am pretty much on an even burn for all of the outrages I've seen. This is just today's outrage.

I could say the same about the Miami protests, the RNC protests, New Orleans, the IWW protest this year, etc.

The fact is, the cops have become totally overzealous and we all need to do something about it. They've been like this for years, but have been getting away with it.

26. I do find it wrong what they did to that young man and my family and myself have been unfairly
pushed around by the police a time or two, so I do know what that feels like, sadly my daughter kind of lost her sanity and now they leave us alone, they are scared of her obviously so is the government so they have no wish to find aid for her or those with her mental disabilities so those with her condition freely walk amongst us and are more than capable of causing harm yet they are ignored and left alone..funny that. I dont see how that young man was a threat to anyone enough to have the use of taser nor the many others the media seemingly have ignored ever since the little device found its home amongst law enforcement.

Right or wrong the amount of attention he is receiving the outright abuse of the use of tasers needs to be addressed at some time don't you think? People have died from its abuse.

But your right to be angry, the reason it is getting more coverage on du is that people tune into the media at all hours of the day and night as they do on du and so they post on what they just heard about and its all over the airways.

A nice diversion from the crimes of the gop though so it works for the msm.

31. Wasn't it the highest recommended post on DU at the time.?
I remember being very pissed off about it, especially when some blowhards kept arguing he deserved it for "resisting" the police. Even though it was on video and everyone could see that the guy flinched when a cop grabbed him from behind and then they broke his ankles for it.

10. Watch this
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CheY0jYXJjY&NR=1

Thats what the other videos don't show.

Then tell me that the kid wasn't specifically looking to cause trouble. He was not asking questions he was "informing" people, as he said. He went looking to stir up shit and then cried like a baby when there were consequences.

The Jena 6 deserve our outrage, this little asshat does not.

17. if one moves once that hand is on the body
it`s resisting arrest no matter what the circumstances. 99% of the police just want to do their job,not get hurt, and go home..it`s the 1% that everyone should be concerned about. as for the du sympathy i have no idea other than there was`t any real time video.

i see chicago cops have a blogger....http://secondcitycop.blogspot.com/

21. People are jaded
You are right in everything you said of course, and I am not defending the lack of proper outrage over the Jena 6 or other groups or individuals that have been treated similarly.

I do however understand why these things happen, at least in part. People are so accustomed to the difference in how black people are treated versus how white people are that no one is shocked by it anymore. Something like Jena happens and instead of being as outraged as is called for, most people simply see it as "same as it ever was". It takes an event that surpasses prior outrages to really register with people. To be honest I don't think the Jena situation would have gotten any coverage at all if the white students hadn't put a noose in that tree. It was that image alone that generated much of the national interest, such as it was.

How do you overcome the racial issues combat fatigue? I don't know really. Keep talking. Keep being outraged, and demand that attention be paid. Keep shaking people, wake them up, make them listen to you. You keep fighting, and I will too. Keep the faith.

. . .gotten a tune up. It does not justify the actions of the officers, however I probably would not have physically resisted the policy I was raised differently.

As someone who was falsely arrested and subsequently had the charges dropped and successfully sued the city I recommend that a person not resist arrest... There are more of them than you and they have guns and bully clubs...
