Elderly Nuns Evicted As Church Raises $660 Mil Fine against Predator Priests

-snip-

The nuns have four months to move out, according to a letter from the archdiocese. The notice, which was dated June 28 but not received until the end of August, asked the women to vacate the property no later than Dec. 31 — and noted that an earlier departure “would be acceptable as well.” Signed by Msgr. Royale M. Vadakin, the archdiocese’s vicar general, the letter offers the nuns no recourse but thanks them for their understanding and cooperation during a difficult time.

-snip-

The nun’s house has been assessed at $98,000, but home prices in the neighborhood start around $700,000 (a steal in Santa Barbara). Not surprisingly, a bishop’s residence in a neighborhood nearby where prices start at $1.5 million is not being sold:

“Auxiliary Bishop Curry of Santa Barbara is residing by himself in a former convent in San Roque, an upper-crust area,” . “The convent there is triple the size of the Bethany Convent and is triple the value. Why not sell the more lucrative real estate that houses one individual?”

-snip-

Reacting to a reporter’s inquiry about the nuns’ eviction, a spokesperson for the Los Angeles Archdiocese was less than compassionate:

“We all have to pay the price for the sins of the few,” Tamberg said. “I didn’t get a raise this year.”

A group of Santa Barbarans met last week to formulate a plan to help the nuns. It would be nice to think that God is on their side.

or even the pope! what a concept, the pope caring about anything female.

1. I read about that in shock.
It seems to me that there are a lot of fancy Archbishop and Cardinals' residences around California that could be sold instead since they were the enablers of these criminals anyway. They should be the ones to pay the prie.

8. Since when does the Catholic Church claim women are unclean?
I agree with the OP though, that it's a disgrace that these nuns are being made to pay for the pedophiles, rather than the hierarchy in the diocese who made the problem even worse.

4. Unload the Vatican
This should be top-down.

Those nuns didn't abuse anyone.

Where is the Captain of the Ship on this deal?

Probably hiding behind a stack of requests for reassignment.

11. Ask almost anyone who went to a Catholic School
Nuns are capable of severe Physical Abuse. How many elders here remember the Strap or the Yard Stick. Corporal punishment was largely in the hands of Nuns.

10. Why doesn't the Vatican write a big check to cover this. They have
the money and ability to do the right thing. Why are they sitting on all of that cash and investments?

13. Despite the seriousness this calls for a "Mission from God"
In a car that's "got a cop motor, a 440 cubic inch plant, it's got cop tires, cop suspensions, cop shocks. It's a model made before catalytic converters so it'll run good on regular gas." run by people who aren't the police but Musicians

Elwood: It's 106 miles to Chicago, we got a full tank of gas, half a pack of cigarettes, it's dark, and we're wearing sunglasses.
Jake: Hit it.

Just seems so right
