Weirdest LTTE...
In our little town in the desert southwest, we've managed to have a small vigil/protest nearly every week... 15 people or so. Lately the signs have tended toward the "Impeach Bush" variety.

This LTTE was published in the little town paper this week. Asking around, I find out that the guy is a rightwingnut.

Is this some kind of tongue-in-cheek? Is this guy extraterrestrial? WTF?

"Recently, I have noted a small, but vocal group demonstrating at the Circle advocating the impeachment of President Bush.

Since the most obvious beneficiary of Mr. Bush's removal would be Vice President Cheney, it ocurs to me that this is a brazen attempt by a group of Republican right-wing extremists, whose actions may or may not have the tacit approval of Mr. Cheney.

As a supporter of Mr. Bush, it distresses me to witness such divisiveness in the Republican party, and I am appealing to the demonstrators to examine their short-sighted emotionalism and unite with their fellow Republicans in combatting the dangerous socialist drift that confronts America."

1. Sounds like sarcasm
How better to insult the anti-Bush crowd than to accuse them of being Republics. I think that's what he's trying to do. It pretty much comes off as lame, though.

4. You nailed my interpretation of the LTTE
also trying to show how much more clever the writer is than the 'foolish protesters' - is the tone I pick up.

5. It could also be a warning....
You want to impeach Bush? Look what you'll get...

Along these lines, I completely support impeachment -- of Dick Cheney.

2. Of course with the table cloth being laid (sensible red plaid)...
...who says Madam Speaker (the tablesetter) isn't setting out two plates? One for Bush the other for Cheney.

3. The pro-war crowd has come to realize they got nothing...

So they are using the most protracted logic to dismiss the validity of the protests. This one was in my paper yesterday. (note the writer doesn't live in an area served by the San Diego Police)

Protecting protesters' rights came with a price
Regarding “Thanks to SDPD for keeping the peace” (Letters, Jan. 30):

The writer said she would like to express her thanks to the San Diego Police Department for its management of more than one war protest march that she has participated in. She went on to say the officers “were present in large numbers all along the route and created a very secure environment for all of us.”

Your thanks is all well and good, but apparently you are not aware that the city of San Diego has been in a financial crisis and that the SDPD has lost more than 200 officers. They left city employment due to retirements and discontent over low wages and benefits.

Just where do you think those officers came from to protect “our rights to protest”? They were stripped from their normal duties to baby sit a bunch of protesters who are upset with the war. How many crimes were committed because the patrol officer was not on his or her beat because they were at the protest protecting your rights?

If you want to protest the war, then write your representatives or go to Washington, D.C., and protest there, where the war policy-makers can hear you. Please don't protest in San Diego where the taxpayers who want police protection in their neighborhoods have to pay your bill. Instead of keeping the peace at protests, those officers should be protecting all neighborhoods in the city.
