If you haven't seen it, check out DU's PNAC Links Archive. There you'll find tons of reporting on the real reason for the Iraq invasion: American hegemony, enduring bases, and a swell game of dominos.

Tonight Bush is going to tell us what we at DU knew all along. They did not plan an exit strategy for Iraq because they did not plan on ever leaving Iraq. Now George is going to break the news to us? Yawn.

Here's just one of dozens of articles in the PNAC Archive >

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution: 9/29/02

The president's real goal in Iraq

By JAY BOOKMAN

The official story on Iraq has never made sense. The connection that the Bush administration has tried to draw between Iraq and al-Qaida has always seemed contrived and artificial. In fact, it was hard to believe that smart people in the Bush administration would start a major war based on such flimsy evidence.

The pieces just didn't fit. Something else had to be going on; something was missing.

In recent days, those missing pieces have finally begun to fall into place. As it turns out, this is not really about Iraq. It is not about weapons of mass destruction, or terrorism, or Saddam, or U.N. resolutions.

This war, should it come, is intended to mark the official emergence of the United States as a full-fledged global empire, seizing sole responsibility and authority as planetary policeman. It would be the culmination of a plan 10 years or more in the making, carried out by those who believe the United States must seize the opportunity for global domination, even if it means becoming the "American imperialists" that our enemies always claimed we were.

Once that is understood, other mysteries solve themselves. For example, why does the administration seem unconcerned about an exit strategy from Iraq once Saddam is toppled?

Because we won't be leaving. Having conquered Iraq, the United States will create permanent military bases in that country from which to dominate the Middle East, including neighboring Iran.

1. I was thinking about the same thing today
I forget about the huge disconnect between the news we hear HERE than the news they give us.
I forget that not everyone knew that we always planned a permanent presence.
Amazing isn't it?

3. Yeah it really is.
I posted because Chris Matthews is exclaiming over this plan as if it were something new. What's shocking is how easy it is to hide the truth right in plain sight. The Atlanta Journal Constitution is just one of DOZENS of news outlets that reported on this before the war. There's been plenty of reporting about the World's Largest Embassy. There have been stories about the Enduring Bases. But the average Joe just knows that Britney had a bad night at the VMA's and Bush is bringing the troops home. We're so screwn.

4. All of his handlers have checked out and he's left in the clutches of Dead Eye Dick.
And we should have known that was not good news for America.

He is terrified that Congress just might grow a spine and impeach him.

6. I wonder why they decided to break it to the people tonight?
Why do they finally have to admit that we're never leaving? The entire Congress knows what's up but they still play along with the charade that we are going to leave at some point.

7. I don't know but I have been reading some discomforting information
about September 14...and then there is the march in Washington on the 15th.
I just don't think this is going to be a good weekend...
