Cindy Sheehan arrested at Petraeus hearing
Cindy Sheehan arrested at Petraeus hearing

By Klaus Marre
September 10, 2007
Anti-war activist Cindy Sheehan was arrested Monday in or near the hearing room where Gen. David Petraeus and U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Ryan Crocker are testifying on the situation in Iraq, according to the U.S. Capitol Police.

Four anti-war protesters were arrested for disorderly conduct. One of them, who was not named, is being taken to George Washington Hospital “due to complaint of injury” and is also charged with assault on a police officer.

According to the information from the Capitol Police, Sheehan and the other three were shouting in a hallway.

Sheehan was the face of the anti-war movement before saying in May of this year that she would “retire” from the cause. Shortly thereafter, she announced that she would seek the congressional seat of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.).

2. It seems to me that if Sheehan keeps getting arrested
and convicted, sooner or later the cops and courts will figure out a way to just keep her locked up. Perhaps too many arrests and convictions, even on misdemeanor charges could lead to something more serious. She should be careful.

22. Assuming this war ever ends won't these arrests be detrimental to finding a job?
What did Ms. Sheehan do before becoming an activist? You can't pay for a mortgage sitting in a jail cell.

4. Oh, man...
cred shred.

There are times to speak and be heard.

And there are those times when silence is strongest.

I am certainly no Bill Frist, but I have to wonder about Ms Sheehan's stability.

7. I love how protesters get injured

but are arrested for assaulting a police officer.

If the protester was injured, ho could they be the attacker?

I know....protesters are STUPID and attack armed, uniformed officers because they are moonbats (sarcasm). It sure is a narrative they want us to believe.

They said this girl assaulted her arresting officer, too.

http://www.turnto10.com/media/JAR/2007/08/14/0003.Image.NULL,NULL.300,198,2,NULL,NULL.MGSpooler.img

"Mark Bray, a leader of IWW’s Providence chapter, said he was standing next to Svoboda on the lawn in front of Luca Music on Mineral Spring Avenue. He said the incident occurred at a moment when demonstrators, who he said numbered no more than 30, were trying to comply with the Police Department’s request to move from the middle of the road and onto the sidewalk as they continued their march toward Jacky’s Galaxie restaurant — the target of the protest.

“I saw an officer put his hands on her and grab her as he went forward into her,” he said. “She was playing drums on the bucket, and she recoiled.” The impact caused her to fall back down into the crowd, according to Bray, who says he then saw the police charge into the crowd after her. “I was right nearby. She was dazed from the initial encounter and then three cops converged on her. One took the task of kicking her legs from out from under her while they pushed her to the ground. It was a fall, but not a natural fall.

“I find it hard to believe that they could not have arrested her in a normal manner. I would hope the police would be trained well enough to simply arrest a young girl walking along the street without having to do this to her.”

He said he knows Svoboda and cannot believe the police assertions that she hit them with her drumsticks. “She is not a hothead that would do that. That sort of thing would be out of character for any of us.”

At this point, I NEVER believe what the cops say when a person they are arresting gets injured in a protest. They always come up with some bullshit resisting arrest charge or assaulting an officer charge. I bet neither charge will stand up in court, but it does in the media while the news is still hot.

That way the authoritarians in our society can nod in agreement that she deserved it. It is an all-too familiar sick game being played out time and time again.

15. Don't be silly
she's free to say anything she wants (and she does!) but that doesn't give her, or anyone else, the right to disrupt congressional hearings.

I just laugh at people who act outraged when people who set out to get arrested get arrested.

20. Still
whether it was inside the hearing room or outside it, she's free to say anything she wants. And she does.

But she's not free to partake in disruption in the US Capital.

This fake outrage over this cracks me up. I'll guarantee you that Sheehan intended to get arrested today. Looks like she had a succesful day.

28. I don't even see Cindy Sheehan in that video
I'm disputing the notion that "free speech is dead".

You, I and Cindy Sheehan can say anything we want. Still.

That doesn't mean that you can ACT any way you want in all settings.

13. Rev. Yearwood is at George Washington Hospital . .
ankle might have been broken

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/09/10/AR2007091001068.html

The fourth person arrested, the Rev. Lennox Yearwood Jr. of the D.C.-based Hip Hop Caucus, was transported to George Washington University Hospital after complaining that he was injured during his arrest. Yearwood was charged with disorderly conduct and assault on a police officer.

Police said he jumped in front of the line and refused to move to the end of the line.

Lori Perdue, an eyewitness and Code Pink protester from Indianapolis, said eight Capitol Police officers "piled on" Yearwood while he waited to enter the hearing room.
