C-Span call-in segment is on Fred Thompson...
People are calling in posing as Democrats, vowing eternal devotion to Rudy Giuliani.

1. That's a regular tactic deployed by the right-wing on C-Span
and is really picking up steam in the last few months. I'm in Tennessee and the thought of having to see that ugly mug (Thompson that is) for the next year and a half makes me want to hurl.

And I don't see the comparisons with Reagan besides the lack of mental acuity...

3. Ron Paul, Ron Paul, Ron Paul
Yep...the phone lines now have Repugnicans calling in as concern troll Democrats, but inversely, the Repugnican and Independent lines have become Ron Paul campaign Central.

7. Ron Paul is a populust among many republicans, however he won't get
the nomination.

The sad fact is, that most republicans will vote republican, even if they don't care for the nominee. I only hope the Democrats, i.e. the so-called "Reagen Democrats", realize that the stakes are much too high in 2008, especially regarding the Supreme Court, and that they use their brains for once instead of their greed, and vote Democratic

Here in California, the rovian pukes have a ballot measure, which if it wins, the electoral votes will be split up among the candidates. It won't be all or nothing. That would be fine if it occurred in every state of the union, unfortunately, they are picking the states where it will help the republicans the most.

Sometimes I wonder if the Democrats have any strategy

11. "Raygun Democrats" Were A Myth
I wish I could find the chart...someone posted it here a while back that showed the party preferences of various age groups. The "Raygun Democrats" were the growth of baby boomer voters in the 80's...many who never voted Democrat (they were too busy partying in the 70s) but now had "yuppified" and become "materialistic". It was people starting to work their way up the corporate ladders who were told that "trickle down" was their meal ticket and that socialistDemocrats were out to raise taxes and take their money. The Democrats had no counter strategy then and the meme soon took hold and the "Raygun Democrat" was born.

I know many of these people...they're my peers and neighbors and over the past few months I've taken the time to listen to them and see how much buyers remorse they have for supporting this regime and the Repugnican party. While many regret booosh they still will consider Repugnicans before they'll vote for any national Democrat. They may be willing to vote out their Congresscritter or Senator, but there's no way they'll vote for Hillary...period.

I had dinner with such a person last weekend. He blamed Carter for every economic evil (failing to note the problems left him by Nixon/Ford) and tried to claim that the 90's was all a Raygun boom...that Clinton took credit for it, but it was all Raygun. While he claimed he's an Independent, he made it clear he'd gladly vote against Hillary and how unelectable she is. If this means voting for a Ghouliani or Mittens...so be it. A new ABC will become part of the lexicon in '08...Anyone But Clinton. It's already in full motion here on DU.

Nope...Ron Paul is an iritant in the Repugnican process but a fun one to watch. I can see him going third party next year...he's done it before and he's using the GOOP primaries to build up a base and some name recognition.

Cheers...

12. Perhaps you are right about the raygun democrats, and I sure hope
you are right about ron paul running as a third party candidate, but I have my doubts

The problem is that reagan has been built up falsely as some sort of extrodinary president, when in reality he gave us the S&L crisis through his policy of deregulation, started the path toward destroying unions in this country, increasing the deficiet, Iran Contra, and so many other issues, that are conviently forgotten

4. The truth is giuliani will appeal more to Democrats than Thompson
if for nothing else, he is pro-choice, for embroyonic stem cell research, and doesn't have a problem on gay issues, which is in contrast to thompson

The Democrats better be very clear on their positions, and not give vauge answers if we expect to win, and if they are attacked, they MUST answer the attacks IMMEDIATELY

8. He has also gone on record as being pro-choice
when bush said it, there was no doubt based on bush's record what he would do. guliani's past record is not the same thing

Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of reasons why guliani would be a terrible president, but the perception is that he is a moderate republican, with liberal positions on abortion and stem cell research

The Democrats better get back to their roots and fast. They had better be loud and clear that it is because of the Democrats that we have social security, it is because of the Democrats that we have medicare, saftey in the work place, and so many other important issues, that the republicans, and the last 7 years have tried to destroy.

It would serve them well to remind labor how the republicans have been slowly dismantling the unions, allowing our jobs to be off-shored, and bringing in cheap labor to replace them

14. Rudy used to be pro-choice...
When he decided to run for president, however, he became pro-life.

regardless, the Democrats must come out very strong and very tough

9. The only thing thompson has going for him is his mediocre acting
In my view guiliani would be much more of a threat, because he can sell himself as a moderate

15. Ghost of Reagan
Edited on Thu Sep-06-07 10:03 AM by zanne
And they complain about "Hollywood Liberals". They elected Reagan, Schwarzeneger, and now they're going crazy about him because they saw him on "Law and Order".
