Tell me what you think:
Dear Mr. Belling
I heard you today asking why the Democrats can turn something like the Larry Craig incident into and indictment of the entire party, while bad behavior by a Democrat never seems to result in a similar indictment of the Democratic Party. You called on the Republicans to turn the tables on the Democrats. Tit for tat, if you will.
It won't work.
The reason it won't work hinges on how you would complete this sentence, "The Democratic Party is the party of (blank)" When have we ever made a pronouncement like that, or more importantly, depended on the answer to that question for votes to win elections.
If we are anything, we are the big tent. A hodgepodge of special interests. The Island of Misfit Toys. We stand for a whole bunch of things, and no one thing in particular.
On the other hand, the Republicans are among other things the party of family values, and they have used that identification to gain votes from Evangelical Christians. They've used "Defense of Marriage" referendums and the like to draw such people to the polls. Anti-gay legislation is part of how you get votes.
That is why an incident like the one with Sen. Craig will affect the Republican Party as a whole.
If you're going to hang your hat on such pronouncements as "We're the party of family values" in order to get votes, you'd better damned well make sure you ARE that party, or you're going to have a problem when someone like Mark Foley or Larry Craig comes along.
Cheers.
Erica
Does it make enough sense to send it. How's my logic?
