The more I read about the AWOL nukes story, the fishier it gets
This wasn't just a case of someone loading the wrong missile on the plane. Each ACM designed to use an atomic warhead is specifically designed and marked for such a purpose. The warhead is not installed in the missile except for training (which must be ruled out since that would have been mentioned as a means of immediately explaining the screw-up if it had happened) or WHEN THEY ARE GOING TO BE USED. If you simply wanted to move the warheads from location A to location B, you would NOT mount them in a cruise missile.

As a fellow in the Navy Times points out:

The Defense Department uses a computerized tracking program to keep tabs on each one of its nuclear warheads, he said. For the six warheads to make it onto the B-52, each one would have had to be signed out of its storage bunker and transported to the bomber. Diligent safety protocols would then have had to been ignored to load the warheads onto the plane, Kristensen said.

http://www.navytimes.com/news/2007/09/airforce_nuclear_warhead_070905/

Also, given the specific difference in weight between a conventional ACM and a nuclear ACM, the PILOT HAD TO KNOW HE WAS CARRYING NUKES! Such weight differences MUST be calculated for fuel consumption and avionics settings. You can't put six nukes on a B-52 then lift off thinking they are conventional warheads. While you may not crash the plane, you would damn sure know something was wrong.

Also, Barksdale AFB, the bomber's destination is the SAC staging area for Middle East operations.

Bush wants to use a nuke so bad he has blue balls in anticipation.

Their needs to be an investigation into this immediately!

2. What ever the "mistake", they now have 6 cruise missles
with "hot" warheads on them, right where they need them...

11. The problem is that
no one in the media or congress are asking questions about the gaping holes in the story.

12. Well, to be honest
I can't seem to find that kilo of anti-matter I had from my college days.

It was in my sock drawer, but I think the cat may be playing with it.

Besides, nothing sucks the air out of an election
like a nuclear explosion.

10. I have to throw the bullshit flag on this one
This sounds like our jackass leader doing some saber-rattling in his inimitable way. I doubt seriously that we would have heard of it if it was true. This is the most secretive government to ever exist. This story is so fishy, it stinks.

If it is true, then the buck stops at the CinC and he should be fired.

14. I've heard many interesting guesses on what really happened
and one that strikes me as highly likely is that there was a "Dr. Strangelove Scenario", and is based on the following conclusions:

1. The protocols for nuclear warhead movement are highly regulated and, as stated in your post, difficult to "accidentally" perform without all personnel involved being fully aware of what they were really doing.

2. Orders for such an operation must have come from high up the chain, and involved a "Jack D. Ripper" officer.

3. Speculation is that this officer is a religiously motivated type who view the war on terror as a fight to to the death between Christians and Islam.

4. The Air Force is thought to have the highest percentage of such religiously motivated types among all branches of service.
