Elizabeth Edwards' "obvious weakness...[she]...isn't perfectly thin" (Fox News)

From Fox News: Why Does John Edwards Leave the Job of Attacking Hillary to His Wife? AKA, why doesn't John Edwards shut his wife's mouth?
By Susan Estrich
...

I have always liked Elizabeth Edwards, admired her both for her obvious strengths and her obvious weaknesses (how can you not admire a woman in her position who isn’t perfectly thin?); respected her for her courage in the face of terrible tragedy, as well as for her intelligence and honesty; appreciated the strength of her commitment to her husband and family, and even envied her for the kind of marriage and partnership that eludes so many smart women of our generation.

...

Isn't it nice to mix it in with all those nice compliments.

I question, is not being "perfectly thin" an "obvious weakness" for someone "in her position?"

This piece written by Susan Estrich (author of "The Case for Hillary Clinton") is an attack piece on Elizabeth Edwards for having the gull to speak her mind. She doesn't criticize the content of Elizabeth's speech, but that she speaks at all.

"Should she be doing it?" becomes the issue, more than "is she right?"

I think someone got Voltaire backwards.

She even decends into using Ann Coulter talking points against Elizabeth.

And when the woman who is launching the attack is herself- as Ann would put it- a classic "victim," it's even more complicated.

The great thing about Elizabeth is that she isn't a victim. She will speak out and loud for what she thinks and what she believes in. As evidenced by the attack on her for being a "bad mother."

http://www.babble.com/CS/blogs/strollerderby/archive/2007/08/28/elizabeth-edwards-delivers-smack-down-and-it-s-brilliant.aspx
A Silicon Valley Moms blogger had the grave misfortune to imply that Elizabeth Edwards is a terrible mother for taking her kids along on the campaign trail (John Edwards for President!!).

In addition to slamming the Edwards clan for their 28,000 square foot pleasure palace (earned by "ambulance chasing"), Ms. Edwards is called out for dragging her kids along on the campaign trail even though they don't want to go (insert whine).

Elizabeth Edwards doesn't leave self-defense to PR hacks. She responds directly in the comments so articulately the angels of well-spoken mamas everywhere are singing. Here is a portion of her response:

I want to be entirely clear. You don't get to say I am a terrible mother because you think you wouldn't make my choices in my situation. You don't get to say that my children don't want to be with us when you don't know them and when, parenthetically, you know that happy children can be periodically disagreeable.

Maybe that is what really scares Susan Estrich and Ann Coulter about attacking Elizabeth Edwards. Unlike some other targets, she won't take it lying down. That isn't called playing the victim, it is called defending herself and speaking out. And that is exactly the kind of behavior Susan Estrich wants to stop.

It is no wonder Susan Estrich wants Elizabeth to stop. If she keeps on behaving like that, we will continue to love her for it. Susan Estrich would much rather have us fall in love with another woman.

1. You know....as they keep attacking Elizabeth Edwards they
are indirectly attacking other cancer victims and many of those Victims are Republican...cancer doesn't ask which way an individual leans politically.....

Let's continue to watch them self implode.

8. Actually, she should be running instead of her husband.
I have much more respect for her. Him... eh... not so much. His ONLY positive, in my mind, is that he married - and has stayed married to her, weight or no.

7. What makes Susan Estrich and Ann Coulter experts on
child rearing?
how thin a mother of four in Elizabeth Edwards' position should be?

Susan Estrich and Ann Coulter are failures in the motherhood and family relationships department. They should keep their opinions on these matters to themselves.

Elizabeth Edwards is a loving, warm person. The people she hugs feel comfort, love and respect.

If either Susan Estrich or Ann Coulter gave me a hug, I would ask myself what they were trying to get out of me. Elizabeth Edwards is lover and a giver; Susan Estrich and Ann Coulter are haters and takers.

9. Good grief. That's just idiotic.
I think she's beautiful & would love to look that good... although I must say that I don't give a flying crap what any of the candidates or their wives look like. When did politics become a freaking beauty pagent?! That's like needing surgery & choosing your surgeon based on looks.... :eyes:

be weighing the heft of their current president's brain.

Let's put it where it goes.

18. Considering that Elizabeth has lost 65 pounds calorie counting
while campaigning and being surrounded by junk food and having cancer treatments this is jsut the stupidest and most vindictive statement I can imagine regarding someone's appearance.

20. What an idiotic comment from a person with little knowledge and understanding...
Perpetuating the stereotype that the value of women is linked directly to the appearance of their bodies is helping to promote shallowness as a virture, and encouraging young impressionable girls to think that their happiness is dependent upon and directly related their body image.

How sad and misguided.

Elizabeth Edwards is setting the right example. WE all should be free to speak our mind, and we need to work through the barriers that others expect to stop us.

24. Susan Estrich is ugly. That's why she focuses on weight.
Elizabeth Edwards is pretty--as well as being everything else she is: smart, courageous, ethical.

Estrich has none of these things. And she's got a face only a mother could love.

30. what's wrong w. these people?
you cannot be "perfectly thin" while undergoing treatment for cancer, you must maintain sufficient weight to get you thru those times when you lose your appetite -- otherwise you will DIE

a friend of mine had cancer in his late thirties, and as a lifelong thin person he was very angry at the weight gain caused by the steroids he was prescribed, however, it was better to be a little chubby and alive than to be anorexic and dead

thin isn't always healthy and it can be deadly to the cancer patient

my friend was so upset about his weight gain (which wasn't even that much) that he eventually had to be given anti-depressants -- and this after beating cancer!

our society is poisoned by this fetish for thin, which has nothing to do with health and everything to do with self hating
