NBC bounce? Olbermann within 6,000 viewers of O'Reilly
Daily Kos: Olbermann Experiencing Post-NBC Bounce?
by Hell Upside Down
Thu Aug 30, 2007

As attested to by the fact that two diaries on Countdown's NBC debut were top rated on this site last week (OK, OK, yes one was by yours truly), there's been a lot of excitement generated 'round these here parts that Keith's unique brand of hard-hitting, don't-take-the-B.S.-talking-points news combined with eyerolling jabs at our pop culture would reach a larger audience and win more converts.

And indeed, the first objective was met when we learned that Countdown's Sunday audience was 4.1 million viewers.

But was the second objective met?...

I regularly follow Media Bistro's TV Newser blog, and am used to, as of late, seeing Countdown's overall audience around 3/4 of a million, with around 225-275m in core demo viewership (the stat the ad people are expecially interested in). So, how did the show fare on Monday?

Overall, the audience was on the high-end of typical, registering 776m total viewers. But look at the core demo for that night: 315m!

Not too shabby. But was this just a bounce from the network show that would level off?

Tuesday's night's rating say: Naw. Core demo viewership was a relatively mellow 251m, but overall viewership was a healthy 787m. Hmmm--what to make of this?

Then came Wednesday's ratings. Core demo? A vivacious 299m. Overall?--974m.

Yes, almost one million viewers.

For extra fun, look at Keith's core demo numbers vs. O'Falafel (Bill O'Reilly). Pay special heed to Wednesday's numbers, where Countdown comes shy by only six thousand viewers.

Where does it go from here? And will it result in enough of an increase to prompt the network suits to give Countdown another shot on the peacock?

3. That would be a bold and interesting move on the part of NBC.
Placing KO on "Sunday Night Football" was actually not a timid move by the network.

Damn. If they did that, I'd have to watch!

5. I didn't know that. The ads could definitely be moving viewership. nt

O'Falafel is toast (no pun intended) if that's the case.

6. Gee, I was just going to say
KO has gotten too cutsie, snarky for me of late. I hate how he's handled Craig. Yeah, Craig deserves scorn but when it crosses the line it starts to look like gay bashing to me.

Or just hitting someone when they are down.

Too cute.

I want more news.

But...if he can pull people in with that stuff, the better for us. He's on our side AND he seems to be listening to us.

13. You may think that poster's kidding, but (s)he's not!
That's true: O'Lielly's viewers are kicking the bucket at alarming rates. His average viewer is 72.

17. On our local board, Dems and Rethugs, a forced-birthing Rethug said she
was tired of FOX Noise and didn't feel like she was getting the news she needs. I recommended The NEwsHour because I think she'd like the coverage and indepth reporting plus their arts coverage. The main point is that she is ready to stop watching Faux News because their lies are coming out.

19. O' Reilly is off this week
I assume he'll be back next week. That's the ratings I want to see. And let's see how KO stacks up with him getting more exposure on NBC football.

20. Bill-O was on vacay?
Then those ratings aren't that impressive. CNN has also gone to shit lately in that 8pm hour. I'm sure he's gaining viewers from CNN bleeding them. And I noticed from those good ratings were just from Monday/Tues-not the entire week. 2 nights isn't long enough to declare a trend.

23. Thank you, RL! O'REILLY'S BEING OFF WAS NOT MENTIONED IN THE PIECE, so is not in the OP.
I apologize for posting without this fact in the post, and I appreciate your bringing attention to this important point. While it is still quite an accomplishment to come this close to Fox News Channel at 8:00, O'Reilly's having a sub is doubtless a "factor" in these numbers.
