As most of you know, I've spent the past couple years working in Egypt. (And am typing this from Alexandria.) After a short trip back to the U.S. tomorrow, I'll be coming back for another 2 years. Unless I succeed in my valiant efforts, while in the USA, to commit Suicide By Bacon Cheeseburgers...

One day, coming home from work, some of my Egyptian co-workers wanted to stop at a village butcher shop. I live in Alexandria, but my long commute every day takes me thru a whole string of little farm villages near the Nile Delta. Lots of fun! We get to dodge all the usual insane Egyptian traffic, plus donkey carts, horses, farm tractors, water buffalo, sheep, dogs, geese, chickens and kids of both the goat and human persuasion.

While my co-workers bartered with the butcher, I pulled up a chair and interfaced with the local population.

An Egyptian walked up with a big scowl on his face, making a "thumbs down" gesture. Then he hollered: "George Boosh no good!"

Of course, I agreed with him that Boosh was dumber than a homar (donkey). Though considerably lazier and less useful.

Then the Egyptian guy smiled, changed to a "thumbs up" gesture, and said: "Bill Clinton! Mea-Mea!" Mea-mea is colloquial Arabic meaning "the best" or "100 per cent."

I nearly fell off the chair laughing, nodded vigoroously, and yelled "Saddiqi!" ("My friend!")
