West Coast reminder: Lunar eclipse visible tonight
Lunar eclipse visible tonight

SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Night owls and Bonnie Tyler fans will see a total eclipse of the moon tonight if the sky of San Francisco can stay clear.

The moon will just after 7:30 p.m. tonight but will not start passing through the weakest part of Earth’s shadow, or penumbra, until 12:52 a.m. Tuesday, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.

At that point, the moon will begin turning reddish or orange caused by sunlight moving through Earth’s atmosphere.

The moon will be entirely consumed by the shadow at 2:52, and the total eclipse is set to last until 4:22 a.m., or 1.5 hours, when it starts moving out of the Earth’s strongest shadow, or umbra.

5. it's tonight
Starting at 4:51 EDT -- mid-eclipse at 6:37 EDT.

If you live up to your name, Up2Late, and are in the Pacific time zone, you'll still be up when it begins in half an hour; mid-eclipse is 3:37, and it doesn't end until 4.:22.

The partial eclipse has started - it becomes total about 80 minutes from now,
and it stays total for about 90 minutes.

9. Starts in 4 minutes.
Of course, thunderstorms developed here within the past hour, so we won't get a drop of rain but the clouds will block the moon. :(
