Hastert to Step Down Early (This November) Triggering Special Election
Hastert to Step Down Early
An Illinois Republican source tells the Evans-Novak Political Report that former Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) "plans to resign November 6 this year instead of finishing out his term. This would create a vacancy and trigger a special election in the 14th District."

Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) "would get to pick the date of both of the special general election and the special primary election (with separate ballots for each party). The general election would have to be within 120 days of the vacancy (meaning by early March, if the November 6 resignation date holds). February 5 is the date for Illinois's presidential and congressional primaries, and slating the special election -- either the primaries or the general -- on that date would save state money."

With Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) on the presidential primary ballot, this could draw more Democrats to the polls.

"On net, Hastert's early resignation, by stirring the pot, gives Democrats a slightly better chance in this Republican district."

3. I Still Can't Figure Out Why Hastert Needs To Do This So Fast......
why doesn't he serve out his term? What is the real story behind him resigning?

5. Wonder if he's heard from Larry Flynt?
Flynt could be *tweaking him* privately, dangling evidence?

9. He is afraid to wait because the rhetoric about bush is getting worst.
Right now he might get a republican to take his place. If he waits the climate will definitely be more biased against republicans and a dem might get the nod.

10. At this point, getting a repuke
to take his place is iffy, even in this red district. The Illinois repuke party is badly fractured.

I think it would be funny if the Milk Nazi ran. There is talk he will. Any other repukes who run will be relatively unknown.

This will cost a lot of money, for both groups of candidates. Maybe he wants to make everyone spend their campaign money for the special election, so that they have little for the regular election.

Laesch got 40 percent of the vote against Denny in the last election. I think a Democrat can take it this time. The special election is a ploy to muddy the waters and cost valuable time and money. The 14th District will need a strong GOTV effort among Democrats in the special election. Since they border me, I will help. I will be working on GOTV efforts in the 16th, too. That will not be as hard, with Obama running in the primary. I don't know about the general election.
