"Daily Show" comics venture to Iraq

Mon Aug 20, 2007 2:42am ET147

By Paul J. Gough

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - Fake-news program "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart" is taking a page from serious news organizations this week with on-the-scene reports from the war zone in Iraq.

Correspondent Rob Riggle, who has combat experience as a major in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve, spent five days in Iraq last week with "Daily Show" writer Kevin Bleyer and field producer Glenn Clements. They went with a USO sketch comedy tour known as "Operation Feel the Heat" -- armed with small, handheld cameras -- and also brought back video that will be used for "Daily Show" about the troops and their lives in Iraq.

Although "Daily Show" spends time on topics related to Iraq and often has one of its correspondents appear against a greenscreen that simulates the Middle Eastern country, it's the first time the show has gone the extra step and visited Iraq.

Riggle, Clements and Bleyer visited several bases -- including Balad Air Force Base near Baghdad and two forward operating bases -- over five days. They performed with other comedians in 120-degree heat on makeshift stages, including a basketball court, then in between shot short videos for "Daily Show." "Definitely it was run and gun," said Clements, who with Bleyer ran the handheld camera. "First and foremost, we were there to entertain the troops."

1. Thanks so much for posting this. I wasn't going to tune in because usually
Monday nights are repeats. Another example that Jon just refuses to "listen" to the stories from others, wants to see for himself. The biggest joy for me is that these men and women will hopefully have some genuine good laughs. Sort of reminds me of the early days when Bob Hope used to do his USO trips, they usually aired around Christmas and we couldn't wait to see them. Way to go Jon. Bet he will have some good reports when he returns, his I'll believe...

7. His piece was mostly a big video montage of all the armored vehicles he traveled in...
...and they did a split screen of him IN Iraq and Aasef Mandvi in front of a Green screen, which was also a "you gotta see it..." thing.

But the Guest!

Oh MAN! Jon is really going to get some very NEGATIVE mail for this one!

Nickolas Kosloff (sp?) Author of a new book on why we should hate and fear Hugo Chvez of Venezuela.

The only good thing I can say about that interview was that Kosloff looked so foolish and came across as a major Dork, because Jon clearly knows little to nothing about Chvez, other that what he learned on Fox "news".

Sorry, my typing sucks tonight.

6. I heard today that Obama is only going to do EIGHT more of these debates this year...
...and then THATS IT.

Man, I really do need to work on recruiting others to join me in boycotting these stupid MSM debates

There might still be a replay around 5:00pm, but I'm not sure about that one.
