Are you saying that there is no theocratic agenda that's permeating our culture at present?

21. Well, the ones pushing a theocratic agenda
tend not to be the ones who dress modestly. Amish and Mennonite are pacifists, and I don't know that they even vote in elections. The 700 Club crowd is made up of a different demographic, and they don't tend to wear this kind of fashion.

They're more into the "Dynasty" look. Lots of hairspray. Expensive. They're not shy aobut making a show of wealth. Lots of jewelry, etc.

28. Amish and Mennonite men
I've seen wear suspenders (no belts) and jeans and long shirts. The Amish wear solid colors while the Mennonites sometimes wear plaids, but subdued. Old Order Amish men also wear hats-straw for summer, black felt for winter. I think the reason they don't have pages for men at these websites is because it is easier to obtain modest garments for men. After all, in our society it is usually the women who fashion requires to dress provocatively.

I don't have kids, but when I see how sexualized some of the girls clothing is in stores I can see why people would want an alternative. Its hardly the taliban.

48. Yep
I have a 6 year old girl, and let me tell you, some of the stuff they have for girls her age is pretty damn sexualized (nothing like what I wore, which was just hideous, it being the late 70's and early 80's). I am very careful when buying clothes for her. We'll have more than enough time for worrying about the "cool" sexy stuff when she's a teenager. :scared:

I'm surprised, though, because in the first site the garments would be something a moderately good sewer would be able to make on their own, especially the jumpers.

14. That Hannahlise stuff is pretty enough but not practical for every day IMO
the first site looks like dresses for a Little House on the Prairie halloween costume.

But it doesn't bother me. If people can run around with their ass crack showing, they can run around in 1890s clothes. We're free to wear what we want.

50. Faux Denim bothers me.. why not real denim skirts..
I liked the wedding dresses because I loathe fussy, frilly wedding dresses and the bridesmaids dresses
are actually better then most dresses with frills and ruffles.

The bathing suits bother me, they have to be heavy so swim in and dangerous for small children that are not confident swimmers. A swimming costume has a purpose of making the swimmer glide easily through the water. And no little girl that learns to swim in all that clothing is going to learn to swim seriously or going to be inspired to be athletic.

The outfits themselves would be ok, it is the mentality behind them, that says little girls are immodest without ankle length skirts and layers of clothes.

17. grew up around Amish and Mennonite
never saw anything wrong with their dress. Actually, the second and last sites have some clothes that look good to me. Since none of these places mandate that all women wear them, what's the harm? I'd hate to live in a world where everyone had to dress in miniskirts and bikinis, neither of which have ever looked good on me.

31. I don't get it.
The fundies come banging on my door insisting that my religious beliefs are inferior, there's a serious problem. If they want to dress funny, what the fuck do I care? They can dress up as Big Bird and dance around the courthouse as long as they leave me alone.

Why the nastiness about poor fashion sense? You want to see real sartorial horror, flip through photos of just about any fashion show in my lifetime. Laugh if you have to, but save the bile for something that makes a damn.

I have to admit, though, the all-denim look is kinda disturbing.

36. Perhaps they sell to the
Mennonites? I don't think the Amish will wear anything with zippers or machine sewing--I could be wrong. Nothing wrong with that, but these small groups are most likely not the profit hounds the clothes designers are looking for.

I think that these so-called "Christians" are in a hurry to bring the world back to the Middle Ages--or the Dark Ages. It was a time when those on an extreme right-winged Christian bent were in control and that's what they want to do again. They're afraid of the world leaving them "behind" and that's why they want to leave everyone else "behind." And while I lament the need for a little more formality at times (and who wants to see some of the hideous fashions that are currently out there?), I think that putting women and children--mostly--into such "modest" outfits is just a reminder of how many of these religious nuts want to keep women in their "place."

39. I think you are right.
Last week I was at my local 7-11. A car pulled up and three girls between the ages of 6 and 10 got out. All of them had long hair (as in never been cut), long skirts (it was over 100 degrees) and over sized t-shirts on that said "My Body Belongs to Jesus Christ".

I was still in my car talking on the phone. I noticed that the two oldest girls went to the candy bar section and filled their pockets with candy. Their father was standing right beside them. Their father then got a bottle of water and went to the counter to pay. By this time I was in the store and just watching. The girls just hung back while the father paid. As he finished I calmly asked from behind him "Do the candy bars the girls stuffed in their pockets also belonged to Jesus Christ?"

The father made a big scene - acted like he didn't know what they had done, acted like he was really angry at the girls, and told them Jesus was going to punish them. I then asked him if I could buy a candy bar for each of the girls. He snarled at me and said no - they don't deserve them.

The store owner is a friend and he told me the whole bunch comes in all of the time and Dad just buys a bottle of water. He had never suspected what they were up because of the Jesus stuff.
