A joint military exercise will be held between troops from Russia, China and Central Asian states.

The exercise, designed to show off their alliance's increasing power, will take place in Russia's southern Ural region and will focus on counter-insurgency.

About 6,500 troops from Russia, China and friendly states, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Tajikistan will contribute to the exercise, which will be viewed by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Hu Jintao.
