The remains of two more people found in cars under the bridge
http://www.channel4000.com/news/13907213/detail.html

The Hennepin County Sheriff's office said two vehicles containing human remains have been recovered from the Interstate 35 bridge collapse.

The bridge, a major artery into the downtown area, collapsed Aug. 1 during the evening rush hour.

The sheriff's office said teams brought up three vehicles from the bottom of the Mississippi River Wednesday night and that one of those vehicles contained human remains.

Another vehicle containing human remains was brought to shore early Thursday.

Tim Pawlenty, this happened on your watch and the blood of this is on your hands and the hands of the Minnesota Taxpayer's League. Sleep well.

This is just awful. The whole country is still waiting to hear.
I get updates on every local news cast here.
That and waiting to hear about the miners too. :(

3. Death toll is now 11.
Still known missing: 2.

It is incredible that this bridge did not take out hundreds of people.

5. When the I-40 bridge was knocked down by a barge near here in 02
they had all the (14, IIRC) victims recovered in a couple of days and rebuilt the bridge in 61 days. I know the Mpls bridge is more damaged but MN is a lot wealthier state than Okla...seems like they could be doing a better job.
Here's a pic of the I40 one

6. I'd venture to guess that the Mississippi is a little larger than
the Arkansas Creek even at Minneapolis.

9. You would be guessing very wrong. The Ark is WAY bigger.

13. The Mississippi is the second largest river in the USA
The Missouri is longer.

7. They are dealing with the wicked currents of the Mississippi River
and have had several severe thunderstorms since then. Even with the lock and dam holding the flow back, because of all the rain, the river is still faster than normal. The waters are also very very murky (moreso than one would think being so close to the source). I believe they are taking it slow, in order that the big pieces of debris do not go downstream and cause damage to more infrastructure.

The Mississippi River in Minneapolis is not a lazy river at all.

8. Yes but the Ark. river is 10 times as big...and dirty.
You might be right about the debris though.

11. Again there have been several thunderstorms
The last one was I believe on Saturday, and there are still thousands of people without power after that one.

10. Here are some maps and an explanation.
See these two tiled maps. The first one is of the area where the lock and dam is (the lock and dam is just to the right of Central Ave/TH 65, The second tile is immediately to the right of the first tile and the big yellow road is 35W. As you can see, the river goes from fairly wide to very narrow there. Very fast currents, not easy to work in.

Then you know what a few severe thunderstorms with a lot of rain can do to the current.

15. The difference is the size of the bridge that collapsed.
The section of the I40 that went down was fairly small, with only one short span dropping completely into the water. It also went down in one piece. The bridge in MN is MUCH larger and disintegrated as it went down, so the rescuers are digging through rubble. Underwater rubble. With nasty currents.

22. Wasn't that the one that happened late at night and people kept driving off the bridge?
A friend mentioned that bridge failure the other day.

The idea of motoring down a dark highway only to have empty air replace the road is scary as hell.

26. No, this one happened around mid-morning. I do seem to recall one like you
mention but don't know where it was. The Sunshine Skyway fell down when I lived in Tampa and a lot of people drove off the edge...including a bus but that was in the daytime too.

23. Well, then maybe you better send up those Oklahoma heroes
because clearly the people in Minneapolis are just fuckwit jackoffs who are deriving incredible pleasure at doing a shitty, miserable job and prolonging people's suffering.

God, I wish we were all as efficient and pure as Oklahomans.

24. Only for the immediate families but the shock of a large number
of deaths at one time does wear off. How many people even continue to wonder about the number of dead in Minnesota or the six missing miners.

19. I disagree with you.
If they could get them all out quickly they would.

Winter is coming and I am sure they want the recovery of the remains before that happens.

20. No, it's not like that at all
The entire bridge collapsed, showering tons of steel and concrete into the Mississippi and on the banks on both sides. Some of the cars ended up under all of that, so that's whey it's been so hard to find the victims. The water is murky and with all of the rebar sticking out and other debris, the divers are looking for a needle in an underwater haystack blindfolded.

21. this is the legacy of Reagan and Bush: that people so mistrust
the government that they will ascribe the worst motives to any government action or inaction. Just because Bush emasculated FEMA, that doesn't mean that every search and rescue team in the country is incompetent.
