Rising GOP star arrested (Florida)

Angelo Cappelli is accused of theft from the estate of a deceased bank client.

By NICOLE HUTCHESON and AARON SHAROCKMAN, Times Staff Writers
Published August 16, 2007

ST. PETERSBURG - Less than a year ago Angelo Cappelli was a hot newcomer on the local political scene, building key allies in his race for House District 52.

Cappelli narrowly lost the election, but his fundraising prowess, Ivy League pedigree and well-established banking job with SunTrust solidified his future with the local Republican Party.

<snip>

After a six-week investigation, police arrested Cappelli on Wednesday morning at his lawyer's office on Central Avenue. He faces grand theft and perjury charges, according to St. Petersburg authorities.

Cappelli, 37, is accused of stealing more than $100,000 from the trust of a deceased bank client. By Wednesday evening, Cappelli was out of jail on $55,000 bail. He could not be reached for comment.

1. I would have thought some kind of criminal behavior would be
required from a Florida republican.

Shows how much I know.

4. Loose ethical behavior is definitely a plus, but that, unfortunately, isn't
reserved to just Florida Republicans. It's also necessary for old guard Democrats (DINOs). I think if you work in the real estate industry for a couple of years, it's like getting a GRE into the inside track political Florida landscape.

5. Gaze upon a Republican value...
Just once in my life I'd like to know that a Republican paused and decided not to do something, because a still, small voice in his head said "Hey, you know, that's illegal and unethical."

Such is their rep that I never expect that to happen.

7. It's sort of refreshing to see a republican busted for something not sex related
He didn't pimp himself in a public restroom to an undercover cop? He didn't give oral sex on sleeping men? Stealing from the dead seem so much more tame than the usual stories. :D

8. Now now. He was actually stealing from the living.
He was stealing from the heirs to the estate. Things haven't sunk so far that a GOP rising star is merely stealing from the dead.

9. all repukes are criminals
it's part of the pathology

any of your "friends" or family who are repukes but "really nice people" no longer get free passes. They are either criminals (or willing accomplices), mentally ill or both.

for Republicans. Just fill in the name and the crime.
