Suspension "ends at 03:34 PM, Monday August 13th". Why do I find this so ---uh, bothersome?
Edited on Sun Aug-12-07 06:51 PM by trumad
I just read a post that linked to a members suspension and was surprised to learn that suspension notices like this even existed here at DU.

This member has been suspended for 7 days. The suspension began at 03:34 PM, Monday August 6th and ends at 03:34 PM, Monday August 13th.

While this member is suspended, they are not able to post, vote in polls, recommend threads, send alerts, or send private messages.

I guess it's better than outright being banned--- but does this really have to go out to public display? Is it this forums contention that public humiliation is a good deterrent?

1. I don't know, Trumad - a tombstone is just as public
it is good for someone who is worrying about a poster not returning and IM or something.

tagged as the bad guys if he was banned with no explanation.

"Thank you for everything. EVERYTHING. I'm at william.pitt@truthout.org if you need to reach me. I'm going to ask the Admins to granite-cookie me, because I'm addicted, and therefore need to cut the vein-arm off at the elbow.

Maybe I'm all wrong...but I know what my mission is, and I must do my best to fulfill it...and it doesn't seem to fit here anymore...and I can catch beatings in my bedroom, right?

I love you guys. Kick ass, take names, chew gum.

Peace."

14. I think it's OK
It provides a cool-off period.
The posts that people get into trouble over are public too. It may help when people can see what is tolerated and what is not. People who have been personally trashed need to know that the situation was handled too.

WP wanted to be granite stoned, as I recall, because he did not want to be tempted to start posting again. This accomplished what he wanted. He should have kicked the habit by Monday.

15. Didn't this person say he was gone?
So why does he get suspended while others who say goodbye are just plain old gone? Is there favortism going on here? It sure looks like it. Nothing against the guy who got suspended, but fair is fair. If the person voluntarily chose to leave, that was his choice and no one else's. Personally, I believe if a person chooses to leave, just leave and don't burden the rest of us who just don't care.
And in closing, let the flames begin because I know I am talking about a "sainted" figure here, but in my mind, he's just another guy.

17. WilliamPitt is a founding member of DU.
He's been fighting since day one of the Bush Junta's regime.

Why was he "suspended"?

so he wouldn't be tempted to post again. I think that's what he said in his goodbye thread.

25. No, he's not a founding member.
He arrived here about four months after DU's inception. However, he would be very missed around here, so I do hope we see him back.

18. Why Was He Suspended
Edited on Sun Aug-12-07 07:24 PM by DemocratSinceBirth
I once was suspended three days for skipping school... Isn't that ironic? Somebody didn't want to go to school so you give him three more days off...And what was more dumb is if you don't even get on the bus to go to school it becomes a police matter but if you get to school via bus and then leave you get suspended...

23. Punitive particles. If you believe that people are swayed by humility, it's effective.
IOW, it is a behavioral management tool.

Questions?

26. It's relatively new.
Elad programmed it in March or April, and we've handed out a few each month since then. We felt that we need to have an option that was more serious than sending people a stern message, but not a tombstone.

maybe instead of all the text, you could have a little hand-slap image (like the tombstone one).
