Deaths in Fallujah: Blackwater Email Exposes Gear Shortages

The day before four American contractors providing private security in Iraq were ambushed by a mob and their bodies dragged through the streets of Fallujah, their immediate supervisor sent an anguished, urgent email to his seniors at Blackwater Security Consultants, begging for armored cars.

"Guys are in the field with borrowed stuff and in harm's way," the supervisor, Tom Powell, wrote in an email sent at 1 a.m. on March 30, 2004. "Which I'm very uncomfortable with, given the upcoming events, with 5 million Shia moving into Karbala in five days.

"I have requested hard cars from the beginning and from my understanding, an order is still pending. Why, I ask?...It is my understanding that someone in Kuwait made a decision to go with Suburbans that are used" instead. "Bad idea!"

"Iraq For Sale" relates the breathtakingly enormous scams by Blackwater, Titan, CACI, and Halliburton/KBR in stories which are sketched out by some of the field employees (or their surviving relatives) whose jobs were to carry these scams out, at risk of their own lives. You will hear and see, for example, convoys of trucks carrying NOTHING, roundtrip, over dangerous roads in order to bilk the government. Brand new expensive trucks being destroyed after having been intentionally sabotaged by the contracting companies, who left off the oil filter in order to kill the engine so as to be able to order a new truck and bilk the government. Various categories of equipment being ordered, but intentionally specifying the wrong tool for the job, so the equipment can be received, destroyed, and then reordered to bilk the government. Trucks destroyed after nothing more than flat tires--to bilk the government for a replacement truck. Abu Ghraib Prison stuffed with prisoners with absolutely no "intelligence value", so that Titan & CACI employees could interrogate them and so bilk the government. Contaminated water being given to soldiers to bathe in and drink. It goes on and on.
