Historic Crocker Tree to Be Removed
Historic Crocker Tree to Be Removed

A Sacramento County hearing officer decided Friday to allow the Crocker Art Museum to remove a century-old heritage tree as part of the museum's expansion plans.

Under the ruling, the old Bunya-bunya tree that towers above the Crocker near the corner of 2nd and O streets can be taken out once the museum obtains necessary permits and pays a $12,350 fee that would have been used to preserve the tree.

While the original plans for the museum's 125,000 square-foot expansion called for building around the tree, Sacramento city officials said the addition of a new fire lane and other essential accomodations made it impossible for the historic tree to stay.

"It blocks the fire lane," said museum information officer Leanne Ruzzamenti. "So it's a fire issue and it's also a safety issue." The Bunya-Bunya tree also annually sheds large, heavy seed cones that can injure someone on the ground.

5. It would have to be something *very* sturdy.
Those seed cases weigh around 8 kilograms (17+ pounds) and can drop, without warning, from over 100 feet up. They can punch right through a metal car roof.
