Recall of 414,000 TV Stands sold by Wal-Mart due to Collapse Hazard.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Sauder Woodworking Recalls TV Stands Due to Collapse Hazard
WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with the firm named below, today announced a voluntary recall of the following consumer product. Consumers should stop using recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: TV Stands

Units: About 414,000

Manufacturer: Sauder Woodworking Co., of Archbold, Ohio

Hazard: The TV stand can collapse if the fasteners used to connect the metal legs to the lower shelf are not completely tightened during assembly, posing a risk that the TV set can fall onto children or adults.

Incidents/Injuries: Sauder has received 43 reports of TV stands collapsing. Most of the reported incidents involved stands that had recently been assembled. Three injuries required medical treatment including a broken arm, a torn rotator cuff with a concussion, and an injured finger. These injuries occurred when consumers attempted to prevent a TV from falling off the stand. In addition, a 6-year-old child received a bruised shoulder when the stand collapsed and a TV fell on her.

Description: The recalled TV Stand measures 23 inches (h) x 38 inches (w) x 19 inches (d) with a brushed maple finish. The stand has criss-cross, black, wrought-iron legs, a pull-out drawer, and a lower shelf. Model number 400205 and UPC number 42666 01958 are located on the products carton and instructions.

Sold at: Wal-Mart stores nationwide and online at Wal-Mart.com from January 2005 through May 2007 for about $90.

Manufactured in: United States

Remedy: Consumers should stop using the TV stand immediately if it moves from side-to-side. Consumers should contact Sauder to receive detailed instructions on checking the tightness of the fasteners.

Consumer Contact: Contact Sauder toll-free at (866) 218-8312 between 7:00 a.m. and 11:00 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, and between 9:00 a.m and 5:00 p.m. ET on Saturday, or visit the firm's Web site at www.sauder.com

1. Isn't that an assembly issue and not a product issue
Not to take Wal-Mart's side here or Sauder Furniture either, but proper assembly is the responsibility of the consumer.
These things are purchased to be assembled by the consumer. If you want assembled furniture, go to a full service furniture store.
We have purchased some of the Sauder Furniture before from Wal-Mart for our college student. Takes all day to assemble some of it and for the price, it is decent furniture. I don't know what it will look like after 4 years of college but we bought it with that understanding.

You can't idiot proof some things.
"IF the fasteners used to connect the metal legs to the lower shelf are not completely tightened during assembly"

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE ASSEMBLY!

2. but I was in a hurry to put the
42 inch big screen on the damn thing, wasn't my fault. Who has the deeper pockets, wally or sauder? Or do I have to start at the beginning?

3. On an intuitive level,
I wouldn't be inclined to buy it. It looks top-heavy, big table/drawer with not much support near the ground. And I know from limited physics knowledge that things which are top-heavy tend to fall down and go boom.

So yeah a combo of poor design and DIY shortcuts at home on the part of the buyer, eek. Bye Bye expensive TV and ER trips for those who happen to be near when the thing falls.

I hope most people get their money back.

4.  If they are being recalled then there must be something more than faulty
Assembly . just imagine all the fuel wasted while these wal-mart fools went to buy this cheap crap and today made in USA does in no way imply the product is good and now fuel wasted to return this crap . This is just one aspect .

I'm sorry but wal-mart is for fools just like any box store shopper is .

If people don't know how to properly assemble crap then their option is to pay some who does and there goes the savings . Beside how can one be certain this crap was made in the US ?
