The Hill: Anxious Republicans fear another beating
Anxious Republicans fear another beating
By Jim Snyder
July 27, 2007

Nine months after Republicans were routed in the midterm elections, campaign observers, K Street lobbyists and political experts say there is little evidence the party can rebound in 2008.

The same bad news — the president’s low approval ratings, opposition to the war in Iraq, and the lingering taint of congressional scandal, from the Jack Abramoff investigation to Sen. David Vitter’s (La.) involvement with the alleged “D.C. Madam” — leave observers skeptical that the GOP can dent Democratic majorities, let alone reclaim power in the next election.

“The only thing that has changed is that everything that was bad got worse,” said Bernadette Budde, political director of the Business Industry Political Action Committee. BIPAC supports business-friendly candidates of both parties, though most of the group’s donations go to Republicans.

If the election were held today, “We’d be lucky to hold our own,” one House Republican said.

5. Beating? They're lucky we aren't using whips and chains.
I would not have a problem with tying our Republican leadership to four Jeeps driven by selected Iraq War veterans and signaling a heavy hand on the gas pedal.

9. Republics will be lucky to hold on to ANY seats..
Let alone "holding their own".

As cool as it is that the GOP is in an obvious death spiral, it's almost equally as scary that the Dems are going to probably hold significant power in every branch in 2008. Of course that assumes the elections aren't canceled.

The time is ripe for a serious third and fourth party to enter the mainstream.

10. Republicans: What are you doing about it?
Are you reigning in your way out of control President?

Are you voting to put an end to the war?

Are you making sure bills get the fast track through Congress so they can become law?

Are you doing anything about the crimes top ranking members of your party have committed?

NO. You aren't doing jack squat.

And you wonder why you're going to be eviscerated (again) in 2008?

Are you really this stupid? Actions say you are.

17. Absolutely. If They Want to Be Obstructionists, They'll Have to Pay For It
By losing BIG in '08. They're going against the will of the American people by foolishly following a loathed president out of party loyalty. They'll pay the price now, or later.

I just hope there's an AMERICA "later".

12. (Hmmm...) It seems one of the GOP problems is that they DON'T "hold their own."
Edited on Thu Jul-26-07 05:40 PM by TahitiNut
Perhaps they should check with Sen. David Vitter again - and get the message?

16. I want a K Street project for us.
I wanna tell those nasty lobbists to stay away unless they are card carrying, lifelong dems. A lobbying firm hires a republican, they can talk to republicans but NOT to us.
